With the unique distinction of being the oldest city west of the Rocky Mountains, as well as the oldest city in Oregon, Astoria is a lovely coastal city in the northwest corner of the state. The name Astoria was chosen in honor of John Jacob Astor, a businessman from back east who owned the American Fur Company that built Fort Astoria in 1811. A few years after the Lewis and Clark Expedition members wintered in Astoria, the area was rife with fur trapping and trading, one of the main industries in the woodlands of Oregon. The city would soon grow and become a multicultural haven for immigrants from all over the world.

Astoria has been featured in songs and used as a filming location for lots of Hollywood films. John Jacob Astor even commissioned famed American writer Washington Irving to write a book about his expedition to Oregon and the founding of his city, so there is no shortage of cultural references to this fair haven. A bevy of historic buildings and points of interest make the town an amazing place to vacation, while the rich scenery of coastal Oregon solidifies Astoria as a fantastic place to rent an RV. Seattle and Portland are within reasonable driving distance too when you book an RV in Astoria, all the more reason to take a chance on this captivating city.

Discover Astoria

Experience the Sites and Scenery

When you rent an RV in Astoria, you'll have the flexibility and freedom to see the state at your own pace. Better yet, there are some incredible parks, campgrounds, coastal areas, and forests in both the state and the immediate area, and having an Astoria camper rental just helps make it easier to have the trip of a lifetime. For starters, you can head off to Sunset Beach State Recreation Site and the adjacent Del Ray Beach State Recreation Site to the south of town along the shore. These gorgeous beach areas were the first pieces of land that the Lewis and Clark Expedition explored once they reached the Pacific Ocean. Breathtaking sunsets and large sandy beaches await you when you bring your Astoria camper rental for a day trip to the beach.

Even farther south, Tillamook State Forest is another fabulous option if you desire to see the glorious temperate rainforests of Oregon. The forest is one of the rainiest places in the entire country, which is responsible for its unbelievable biodiversity. There are numerous campgrounds in the forest where you can stay with your Astoria RV rental and countless hiking trails that are great for walking and mountain biking.

Ecola State Park is another coastal area worth seeing, with nine miles of splendid coastline to walk along and enjoy. Secluded Indian Beach is one of the main features of the park and is known to be a great place to spot gray whales. Surfing and swimming in this hidden beach cove is a wonderful way to make some memories in Oregon.

Mount Hood National Forest is a three-hour drive away on the other side of Portland and is known for being one of the most gorgeous places in the Pacific Northwest. Oregonians have repeatedly tried to lobby for the creation of a national park to permanently protect this sublime natural area in an effort to protect the natural landmarks and wilderness areas. The forest is among the most popular parks in the country, bringing in four and a half million people each year. There are over 175 recreation areas contained in the sprawling forest, and endless hiking trails looping through the backcountry.

Where to Park It

It should come as no surprise that this amazing vacation destination is full of RV parks and campgrounds due to its popularity. Bud’s RV Park & Campground is one of the places that you could bring your Astoria camper rental. The sites are spacious and there is a large convenience store on site where guests can stock up on food and other camping supplies during their stay.

Lewis & Clark Golf & RV Park is another option, with furnished cabins and RV camping sites overlooking a golf course. There are a clubhouse and other features to utilize while you stay, and it is located within walking distance of several local points of interest. Venice RV Park is close to the beach and you can enjoy local pools, aquariums, movie theaters, and other awesome attractions just outside of the park.

If you'd like a rustic camping experience, you can stay at one of the many state parks and forests in the area, most of which allow RV camping. Amenities might be limited at most of these campgrounds but you'll be in the midst of some beautiful scenery.

City Attractions

Astoria is packed with a variety of attractions and points of interest. It seems as though every corner of every block has some sort of historic building, old theater, or museum. When you rent an RV in Astoria, you can see the towering Astoria Column, a 125-foot-tall column structure on Coxcomb Hill overlooking the city. However, this column is not just for observing. You can reach the top by climbing its winding staircase and see the landscapes below with great clarity. There is even a gift shop that sells balsa wood plane gliders and people love to throw them from the top.

The Astoria-Megler Bridge is an impressive feat of engineering, spanning the massive Columbia River to reach Washington on the other side. Walking across this gigantic bridge is another excellent way to get jaw-dropping views of the region.

The Flavel House Museum, Columbia River Maritime Museum, and the Oregon Film Museum are just a few examples of the many fine learning institutions in the city where you can learn lots of fascinating information. The Columbia River Maritime Museum explores the history of shipping in the mouth of the river and explores the treacherous and demanding waters of the river, detailing just how dangerous they can be for captains. The Flavel House Museum is located in an elegant Victorian home atop a hill, with ornate features that have been fully restored. The house is full of period pieces and antique furniture which are works of art in their own right.
