Belfair is known as the “Gateway to Hood Canal.” Originally named Clifton, it was renamed in 1925 to avoid confusion with the other Washington-state towns with the same name. The town is best known for its annual Taste of Hood Canal. The nearby Theler Wildlife Refuge, Tahuya State Forest, and the Olympic parks offers something for everyone who love the outdoors: nature, birds, and wildlife, miles of trails for hiking and biking, swimming, and boating.

The closest large town is Bremerton, about 15 miles to the northeast, and from there, it’s a 30-minute ferry ride to Seattle. Driving to Seattle otherwise would be around 70 miles. Because there are no bridges crossing the Hood Canal, you’ll have to drive south and around to gain access to the Olympic National Forest and Olympic National Park, at least 40 miles.

This region offers world-class activities like SCUBA diving, hang gliding, and skydiving, a thriving culinary scene dishing out locally-sourced and wild-caught fare, an active social calendar packed with live music and community events and plenty of places to get away from it all.

The region’s population grows significantly during summer with an influx of tourists, but it is beautiful (if a little wet) year-round and a great place to rent an RV.

Discover Belfair

The Great Outdoors

When you book a motorhome in Belfair, you are able to venture into the Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest for hiking and thrilling vistas. Choose from hundreds of easy-access trailheads and visit freshwater lakes or revel in waterfall views. See meadows ablaze with wildflowers in summers, discover hidden swimming holes, and witness salmon running in fall.

The Hamma Hamma waterfall is one of the largest and easily accessible falls in this region. Viewable from a concrete bridge, the waterfall has two drops, making for a dramatic tiered fall. The locals say clamming at the junction of the road to the Hamma Hamma Fall and Highway 101 is one of the best on the Hood Canal. Another popular waterfall is found up at Lake Kokanee. The catch is: you have to kayak or canoe to find it. Much of the Lake Kokanee’s coastline is private property. This lake is rife with rainbow trout.

Nearby Hood Canal offers myriad outdoor activity opportunities throughout the year and is a wonderful place to park your Belfair RV rental so that you are able to get out and explore. Hood Canal is home to thousands of species of fish, marine, mammals, and invertebrates. Trout in spring, shrimp and crab in summers, and saltwater coho in fall and winter.

A little closer to Belfair, the Theler Wildlife Refuge (also known as Theler Wetlands Preserve) has miles of wooden boardwalks skimming across the top of 139 acres of tidal marshes. Watch for red-winged blackbirds, kingfishers, herons, Canada geese, and other waterfowl, to name a few birds. Note: dogs are not permitted in this park. Located in the adjacent Mason County, Tahuya State Park is popular for off-road vehicle riding and hiking, trail running, biking, horseback riding, fishing, and hunting. There are 84 miles of trails for visitors to enjoy so don't forget those comfortable shoes.

Shellfish gathering is a classic Pacific Northwest activity, and you can try your hand at it on the beaches near Belfair. Clams, mussels, and oysters are generally open for harvest year-round

RV parks

When you rent an RV, you’ll need someplace to call home for a few days. The Tahuya Adventure Resort is located in the heart of Hood Canal region, and several towns along the canal are just minutes away. This RV resort offers full hookups for your RV, WiFi, a communal kitchen, and horse and ATV rentals.

Alternatively consider the Glen Ayr Waterfront Resort, which is right on the Hood Canal, and very close to the Olympic parks. It offers 30/50 amps for your RV, views of the canal, access to the beach, laundry, showers, and is pet-friendly.

Should you need to stop overnight in a pinch, consider Walmart, truck stops, and larger grocery stores. The closest Walmart is in East Port Orchard and camping may be allowed here. Just ask the manager for permission before settling in for the night. There is also a Safeway in Belfair that may meet your needs. Just remember to ask the store manager for permission.
