Originally a vast ranchland region, Bellaire was founded in 1908 by William Baldwin, the president of a railroad company. The population skyrocketed from 200 residents to over 10,000 during the post-war building boom. Bellaire gained some minor notoriety when their police department stopped and subsequently arrested Jose Cruz, Jr for having an outstanding warrant, which turned out to be nonexistent. Unofficially known as the “city of homes,” Bellaire is primarily a bedroom community for Houston, which is nine miles to the northeast.

Several well-known actors, athletes, and entertainers grew up in Bellaire: Jose Cruz, Jr, a baseball player, Brent Spiner, an actor known for his role in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Randy, and Dennis Quaid, two well-regarded actors who have appeared in dozens of films and television shows.

The Great Outdoors

When you Rent an RV in Bellaire, TX, you are making a smart decision. Not only is it close to Houston, it’s also a hop, a skip, and a jump to a number of wilderness parks in the area and conveniently close to the coastline, too. The Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge and Galveston on the Gulf of Mexico coast are about 60 miles south. The refuge is one of the most biologically rich parks in southern Texas. The habitat is home to over 400 species of birds, many of which are rare or endangered, nearly 100 species of reptiles and amphibians, and over 100 species of butterflies and dragonflies. Mammals like river otters and bobcats are occasionally sighted, as well. It’s a virtual jackpot for any would-be biologist, nature-lover and photographer. Due to its marshy nature, most of the park is inaccessible by foot. There are a few miles of hiking paths and boardwalks, though. On the upside, the tidal environment means boats. Kayaks, canoes, and other small crafts are welcome, and there are a few boat launches. Bank-side fishing is allowed, and anglers can catch redfish, spotted seatrout, black drum, and several other species.

Sam Houston National Forest, a few minutes from New Waverly, is a massive 163,000-acre park. The virtually untouched piece of wilderness has a few hundred miles of hiking trails. The longest is the Lone Star Hiking Trail, which stretches over 128 miles, winding through pine and hardwood forests and around the perimeter of three distinct lakes. Several trails are multi-use, open to bikes and horses. One trail is also open to four-wheel off-roading vehicles like Jeeps. Canoes and paddleboats can be rented for fishing at Double Lake. All the lakes in this park are known for abundant fishing, especially black bass. During the hunting season, hikers and other outdoor adventurers are advised to wear blaze orange and exercise caution. Bring your RV trailer rental where there are three developed campgrounds with plenty of hookups available.

RV Parks

In the suburbs of Houston, street parking is not advised. When you search for an RV rental in Bellaire, be sure to plan for where you’ll park overnight or while you explore the city. There are several RV campgrounds and parks in the area with varying degrees of service. The USA RV Park in Sugar Land may be a candidate. Although it’s an older park that offers 30/50 amps hookups, it has some modern amenities like high-speed WiFi, pool, and restroom facilities.

Riverbend RV Park in Richmond, which butts up against a small river, has roomy pull-thru sites that can accommodate a large Bellaire travel trailer rental and 20/30/50 amps hookups. It includes free cable and fiber internet, a large laundry room, and private showers.

On occasion, it’s necessary to make an unplanned stop overnight. There are about a dozen Walmart stores within five miles of Bellaire that can accommodate your rental RV. Just be sure to ask the store manager for permission beforehand.

Exploring the City

This close to a major city, there’s plenty of places to see and opportunities for an adventure of a lifetime. A luxury RV rental zips town in style and looks at home in most neighborhoods. The Houston Museum of Natural Science, founded in 1909, boasts a state-of-the-art facility housing the Burke Baker Planetarium, Wortham GIANT screen theatre (an IMAX 4k 3D theater), a butterfly center, and dozens of exhibitions halls highlighting various eras in ancient Earth’s history. The rotating exhibitions change regularly; past displays have featured the history of guns, rare gems and minerals, and wildlife photography by some of the world’s top photographers. The permanent displays include halls devoted to ancient Egypt, paleontology (dinosaurs!), and malacology (the study of mollusks).

Minutes from the steps of the Museum of Natural Science, hundreds of wild animals make their home at the Houston Zoo. Guests can visit over 15 exhibitions in which animals live and interact with one another. Watch elephants take a bath in their own luxury swimming pool or feed giraffes crunchy lettuce. The zoo isn’t just for kids! There are “camps” for adults, in which they can get hands-on experience with some of the zoo ambassadors. Adults and children can also camp overnight and listen to various critters chitter and chat as the sun dips beyond the horizon.

In the heart of Houston is the Downtown Aquarium, which is housed in former Firehouse Station No. 1. The 500,000-gallon aquatic wonderland houses over 300 species of sea life. Octopuses, moray eels, sharks, stingrays, and other colorful fish.

An RV rental will gain you a world of adventure and fun in Houston and beyond! Make some new memories in Bellaire with the family!
