The town of Clayton is located about an hour from the Bay Area cities of San Francisco and Oakland and just an hour and a half from Napa Valley. Lying at the foot of Mount Diablo, the peaceful neighborhoods feel a world away from the traffic congestion of the cities on the other side of the mountains. Renting a motorhome in Clayton is one of the best ways to explore this beautiful slice of California.

As anyone who’s ever seen a video of cars driving San Francisco’s Russian Hill knows, the streets in the city can be pretty tight and miserable to navigate with an RV. Fortunately, the Clayton area has an excellent public transportation system called the County Connection, which runs buses to train stations that connect up with the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). You can leave the Clayton RV rental and all the stresses of city driving back at the park.

Whether you’re hoping to explore the Bay Area or do a tasting in Wine Country, book an RV in Clayton, you’re giving yourself the freedom to roam Northern California as you please.

There are quite a few long-term parks in the area, but not a huge variety of parks offering campsites on a nightly basis. Expand your search and you’ll find the rural and suburban landscapes of Contra Costa County are ideal for RV travel.

The Fairpark RV at the Alameda County Fairgrounds is one of the options, with full hookups available. It’s about 45 minutes from Clayton, however, it’s also closer to some of the cities in the southern section of the Bay Area like Fremont.

If you’ve forgotten anything for your Clayton camper rental vacation, the nearest Walmart is about 15 minutes north of Clayton in Pittsburg. Most of the big truck stops in the area are located on I-5, about an hour to the east. It’d be a good idea to fill up at one of these if you’re coming from anywhere besides the Bay Area, as you’ll probably pass by them on your way to Clayton.

Exploring the City of Clayton

While most of the interesting things to do here involve venturing outside the city limits, your Clayton motorhome rental should still involve some time spent wandering its beautiful streets. To get a sense of the history of the town, your first stop should probably be the Clayton Historical Society Museum. It’s not very big, but it does have some interesting exhibits highlighting the area’s agricultural past and present.

If visiting during the fall and you like great beer, you’ll need to pencil the Clayton Oktoberfest into your schedule. In addition to the biergarten tent, with its long wooden tables and several brews on tap, there’s also traditional Bavarian dancing and a carnival to enjoy. The Clayton Arts and Wine Festival in early May is another great festival, bringing some of the best vino and culture from nearby Napa Valley.

The neighboring town of Walnut Creek also has some interesting cultural attractions including the Lesher Center for the Arts, Ruth Bancroft Garden, and Lindsay Wildlife Museum. Also close by is the Concord Pavillion, which plays hosts to some great concerts and comedy shows during the summer; check their website for a schedule.

If your Clayton rental RV involves traveling with kids, you might want to check out Pixie Lands in nearby Concord. The mini-amusement park has tiny rollercoasters, batting cages, a train ride, and all sorts of carnival games to keep the little ones entertained. Small World Park in Pittsburg is another good option for them with merry-go-rounds, slides, and plenty of shady spots for a family picnic.
