Cochran is a city in Bleckley County, Georgia, which was originally known as Dykesboro. It was first settled by immigrants who worked in a local turpentine industry and was incorporated in 1869 as Cochran after Judge Arthur E. Cochran, who was also president of the Macon and Brunswick Railroad (now Southern Railway). Judge Cochran was instrumental in developing the area and bringing the railroad to town. Cochran was selected as the seat of Bleckley County in 1912. It was the home of Ed Roberts, who created the Altair 8800 microcomputer and is considered the person responsible for creating the microcomputer revolution.

RV rentals in Bleckley County are the perfect choice for your Georgia vacation. There are other communities that visitors should stop and have a look at while they're here. Macon was the Confederacy's official arsenal during the American Civil War. Dublin was where Confederate President Jefferson Davis stayed shortly before being captured by Union soldiers in 1865. McRae has a replica Statue of Liberty (one-twelfth the size of the original) and a replica Liberty Bell, both located in Liberty Square in the city's downtown area. Cordele is the self-titled “Watermelon Capital of the World;” the area on which it exists was Georgia's temporary capital in November 1864 while Georgia's war governor Joseph E. Brown was on the run from Sherman's forces. Perry has been heavily reliant on tourism to support its economy since the 1920s; one of its landmark hotels is the New Perry Hotel, a favorite of tourists from Florida and the family of President Jimmy Carter. Your Cochran travel trailer rental is how you will experience the state of Georgia.

The Great Outdoors

Ocmulgee Wildlife Management Area is a multi-use outdoor recreation area where visitors can enjoy archery and shooting ranges; hunting is allowed for deer, turkey, and small game with the appropriate licenses. The park has a lake and a dock where guests can launch their boats, canoes, and kayaks; fishing is allowed for crappie, bass, bluegill, and sunfish either from on the lake or from a pier. There are trails where guests can hike and view nature, and restrooms are on-site; geocaching is allowed unless there is active hunting within the park.

Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1939 in order to revitalize the land that had become worn out as civilization encroached upon the resident nature. Since then, the park has been restored and has creeks, tree stands, and vegetation that support numerous wildlife species such as the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Visitors can hike the trail system which has boardwalks in some areas to protect the plant life and observation decks. A visitor center can assist guests weekdays during business hours. Visitors may fish and hunt at certain times of the year; hiking is not allowed during hunting season as a precaution. Park your Cochran RV rental nearby, and you can take your catch of fish straight from the river to your RV's refrigerator.

Amerson River Park is made up of forests and meadows and a wetland that is surrounded by a river oxbow; there are bluffs where visitors can have scenic views of the river and riverbanks below. Canoeing, kayaking, and tubing on the Ocmulgee River are allowed, and the park is family-friendly with a wheelchair-accessible playground. It is an ideal setting for photographers and nature observers or those who just want to have a picnic and take in the sights.

Exploring The City

Visitors to Cochran and the surrounding area will have the opportunity to experience an authentic gun range (a Georgia hunting license is required to use the range); staff on-site are friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable. Visitors should bring water or refreshments. There is also a local golf course that is open to the public and has fast greens. A local stage theater offers amateur productions of plays and other entertainments that are enjoyable; it is in a quaint older building that has good acoustics and sloped seating that allows everyone to have a good view. You can also take your Cochran motorhome rental for a self-guided tour of the city or an unplanned ride out on the highways. Driving an RV is a unique experience that everyone should have at least once, and one of the main reasons that RV vacations are so unique.

Takeout is available; if you wish, you can take your dinner back to your Cochran luxury RV rental and dine out under the stars.
