Coupeville sits on Whidbey Island, the largest island in Puget Sound. The town is most well-known for the nearby Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, the primary employer for much of Whidbey Island. In addition to its military roots though, Coupeville and the rest of the island is home a number of artists who are looking for a little bit of solitude while still being in proximity to the big city amenities of Seattle. This leads to an eclectic culture worth seeing when you choose a camper rental in Coupeville.

Coupeville is a charming little town and the perfect place to rent an RV if you want to be near the ocean, but aren’t so much of a sand-between-your-toes beach person. While the city of Seattle, on the other side of Puget Sound, is famous (albeit somewhat erroneously) for its rainfall, you won’t have to worry about that in Coupeville as it lies in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains and experiences a relatively dry climate. That’s not to say you won’t experience some cloudy days while you’re there, but precipitation is relatively infrequent.

The Great Outdoors

Olympic National Park is just a short ferry ride away from Coupeville and offers some of the most varied hiking terrains in the western United States. On its northeastern edge at Hurricane Ridge, the park is dry and has enough snow that it’s open for skiing and snowboarding during the winter months. However, in the Hoh Rainforest, you’ll see flora and fauna that appear downright tropical. Every nook and cranny in the park creates its own microclimate and it’s fascinating to observe the differences as you wander its trails.

Deception Pass State Park on the northern end of Whidbey Island is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in the Puget Sound area. The park is actually one of the most visited in the whole state thanks to its stunning cliff faces and numerous hiking trails. Boat rentals and tours are also available if you’d like to get out on the water.

At the other end of the island, South Whidbey State Park has some fantastic views of the Olympic Mountains along with an excellent beachfront. There are also a few miles of hiking trails that snake their way through the old growth forests that are so iconic of the Pacific Northwest region.

RV Parks near Coupeville

When you book an RV in Coupeville, you won’t have much trouble finding a place to camp with it. At the northern end of Whidbey Island is Cliffside RV Park. This park hosts active and retired members of the military. Sites have full hookups for your RV rental near Coupeville, along with laundry facilities, showers, and beach access overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Back on the mainland, Smitty’s RV Park near Marrowstone offers several sites right next to Fort Flagler Historical State Park (which also has some campsites of its own). The fort is one of several dotting the coastline set up as a defense against enemy ships entering the sound.

One of the nearest Walmart stores to Coupeville can be found in Oak Harbor, the largest community on Whidbey Island. With manager permission, you might be able to stay here for a night or two, but be prepared for self-sufficiency, as their parking lot has zero amenities to speak of.

Exploring the Town of Coupeville

One of the most important things to do when you get a motorhome rental in Coupeville is to enjoy all the seafood that this island community has to offer. Hit up any town in the Coupeville area and you’ll find things like fresh scallops and perfectly fried fish and chips. Having a delicious meal amidst the salty air is one of the best ways to experience island living.

If you’re interested in military history and the great machines used by our armed forces you’ll want to check out the PBY-Naval Air Museum. The PBY aircraft were a type of “flying boat” used during World War II that were instrumental in anti-submarine warfare and search/rescue missions. The museum has a few of them on display along with loads of information about their design and role in the war. There’s even a flight simulator for you to get a sense of what it was like to pilot these strange aircraft.

Whidbey Island is also well known for its artists and you won’t need to go far to find some culture when you choose a travel trailer rental in Coupeville. For a night out, visit the Whidbey Playhouse in Oak Harbor. They have several performances lined up each year, so check their schedule to see if anything’s playing during your vacation. There’s also a farmers market held on Saturdays, which is a great place to get some fresh produce but is also stocked full of locally produced products to take home as souvenirs of your travels.
