Although it once went by a different name, the town of Hayesville has been around for several centuries. This little village in rural North Carolina was situated on the Unicoi Turnpike, the famous trading road that all of the indigenous people of the south used and maintained before the colonists arrived.

Hayesville was named for George Hayes, a politician running for office that understood the people in Hayesville desire to separate from Cherokee County and create their own county. Hayes garnered enough support to create Clay County and the rest is history. Despite all this, the town was not formally incorporated until 1913.

Now, you will only find a few hundred people that call Hayesville home, making it one of the smallest county seats in the entire country. The county is mostly comprised of national forest land, with Chattahoochee National Forest practically surrounding it on all sides, save for a few spots. Even if Hayesville happens to be a small community in a remote area, it is an ideal place to rent an RV, with nothing but forests, lakes, and mountains to explore nearby.

Discover Hayesville

Explore the Outdoors

You won’t have any difficulty getting out into the great outdoors when you book an RV in Hayesville; practically every direction you could possibly head has some sort of wilderness area to visit. Chatuge Lake is a large lake south of town that is a popular recreation destination for vacationers. There are a few nice parks on the shores of the lake, like Clay County Park. This serene little lakefront park has a nice playground, a pavilion, and some great sandy beaches to lounge on after you take a dip in the water. Lake Chatuge Recreation Area is also found on the lake, over on the Georgia side of the border, however. Guests can swim, fish, boat, go tubing or even jet skiing in the waters of the lake, and there is a boat launch for those with their own watercraft. There is a nice shaded campground along the water’s edge for you to stay in your Hayesville camper rental overnight.

Hayesville is sandwiched between both Nantahala National Forest and Chattahoochee National Forest to the north and south respectively, so there is no excuse to miss out on these incredible areas, especially if you rent an RV and need trip ideas. You can hike through the enchanting forest, where the sun’s rays rarely penetrate the thick tree canopies and find hidden waterfalls like Cullasaja Falls. There are well over a half million acres at Nantahala, with three wilderness areas and even some ancient old-growth tulip poplar trees.

If you bring your Hayesville motorhome rental north over the border to Tennessee, you can visit one of the best national parks in the United States. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most visited national parks in the country, with over eleven million visitors per year. There are mountains to climb, parts of the Appalachian Trail to hike, fish to catch, and even an assortment of historic buildings to tour. You can easily find a place to camp in your Hayesville camper rental at any one of the many amazing campgrounds maintained by the park’s rangers.

RV Parks to Visit

Due to Hayesville's location in the midst of two different national forests, finding a place to stay with your Hayesville RV rental is as simple as driving either north or south and looking for public campgrounds. Sundowner RV Village is just outside of Hayesville, and is geared towards adults 55 and up. There are spacious campsites and breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Walnut Hollow Campground is attached to a ranch and farm where you can take tours of the facility and learn about the industry.

Murphy / Peace Valley KOA is north of town. At this campground, there is an in-ground pool, a fishing pond, a dog park, and a pavilion clubhouse where you can mingle with other guests. When you rent an RV, you can also go camping near Chatuge Lake at one of its lakefront campgrounds.

City Sightseeing

Despite its small physical size and population, Hayesville is a county seat for Clay County and possesses lots of wonderful historic buildings. There is also a myriad of vineyards, wine tasting rooms, and antique shops in this small country town. Clay County Historical Society runs several historic attractions and relies on volunteers to keep records to preserve the past. One of these institutions is the Old Jail Museum, which is housed in the old jailhouse built in 1912. Although it is referred to as the Old Jail Museum, it features many different exhibits regarding the Cherokee native people, the African American people of Clay County, and much more.

Cherokee Homestead Exhibit has a highly authentic Cherokee village that has manmade huts, drying houses, storage houses, and other types of native buildings. A team of friendly volunteers can bring you on a guided tour through this inspiring piece of history so you can learn about the indigenous people that came before.
