Marylhurst is a tiny unincorporated community in Oregon found on the southern edges of the Portland metro area. Marylhurst was known for being the home to Marylhurst University for over 100 until it permanently closed its doors in 2018. The university was run by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, a Catholic religious order of nuns with an established convent in the area dating back to the late 19th century.

It is difficult to describe the small community, especially after the closing of its most notable institution. The town mostly consists of residential neighborhoods and a park, so you won’t be finding shopping plazas, restaurants, or many points of interest when you book an RV in Marylhurst. That being said, there are numerous suburban towns adjacent to Marylhurst like West Linn and Oregon City, so finding ways to occupy your time is a breeze. If you feel like escaping the Portland area, Oregon has some incredible coastlines and forested areas that would impress even the most experienced outdoor enthusiasts.

Discover Marylhurst

The Great Outdoors

All it takes is a short drive out of the Portland metro area in your Marylhurst camper rental and you will find yourself immersed in the fabulous scenic countryside of Oregon. The state is known for its world-class natural areas and parks, one of the main reasons for its flourishing tourism industry. Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge is located on the fringes of Portland much like Marylhurst and is worth stopping by if you are a fan of taking wildlife photos. The refuge is one of the few urban refuge areas in the country, protecting wetlands, forested areas, riparian habitats, and, of course, migratory birds. The refuge is home to over 200 species of birds and you can learn about these extraordinary animals in the large Wildlife Center located on site.

Milo McIver State Park is a lovely park on the Clackamas River, less than an hour's drive outside of Portland. It is known as one of the only habitats of Townsend’s big-eared bats, a rare vesper bat. You can hike along the river between towering yew trees or camp out on the riverbanks in your Marylhurst camper rental at one of the park’s campgrounds. Additionally, you can mountain bike, ride horses, go fishing, swim in the river, canoe, kayak, or play disc golf on the park’s course when you stay at Milo McIver State Park.

Bringing your Marylhurst RV rental to Tillamook State Forest is a great excuse to do some road tripping out to the coastal areas. The massive forest stretches out over a third of a million acres and is quite close to the Pacific Ocean. Due to its location, Tillamook State Forest is one of the rainiest places in the entire country, making it a temperate rainforest with amazing biodiversity. There is an interpretive center to greet guests, plus backpacking trails, secluded fishing spots, swimming areas, and a wide range of campgrounds to post up at in the comfort of your Marylhurst motorhome rental.

If you find yourself in the Portland metro area or anywhere close, it is almost obligatory to take a trip to Mount Hood National Forest, an impressive million-acre sanctuary in the mountainous areas of Oregon. Despite only being a national forest, nearly four and a half million people visit the federal land each year, making it as popular as some of the best-known national parks. Mount Hood is the crown jewel of the park, climbing high above the skyline making it visible from far away. There are eight wilderness areas, dozens of campgrounds, a few designated recreation areas, and one massive stratovolcano that you can summit when you take a ride to Mount Hood National Forest.

RV Parks

Renting an RV and finding a place to stay could hardly be any easier in the Portland metro area, with plenty of options to select from. Riverside RV Park is located by the river, with pleasant views of the water. The park is open year-round with spacious campsites, wireless internet, a large recreation room, and secluded fishing spots.

Aurora Acres RV Resort could be a nice place to relax and unwind, just a short walk from Aurora’s downtown historical area. There are laundry facilities, restrooms, a recreation room for guests, and a pool that is open during the summer months.

You can opt to stay at Pheasant Ridge RV Resort near Wilsonville. There is a gas station, convenience store, indoor pool, a spa, and many more features to take advantage of when you stay overnight in your Marylhurst RV rental by owner.

City Attractions

You won’t many attractions in the small Marylhurst community itself, but there are countless other options in the surrounding area. Oregon City, for instance, has a unique attraction called the Oregon City Municipal Elevator. This strange looking historical landmark was built in 1915 and provides a unique vantage point for people to look out over the valley, taking in some incredible panoramic views.

Portland is only a short drive from the town so most of the fun to be had will be in that general direction. The Oregon Zoo is a wonderful place to visit, particularly for families and children. Aside from exotic animals and marine life, you can eat at cafes and restaurants inside the zoo while you walk around all day between exhibits.

The Oregon Museum of Science & Industry in Portland is a great place to embrace your inner geek while learning about the natural world in a nationally recognized institution. People of all ages can delight in hands-on activities, incredible historical artifacts, and even assembled dinosaur skeletons. The Museum of the Oregon Territory is more focused on the history of the region, particularly the first settlers who arrived on the treacherous Oregon Trail. There are a few featured exhibits concerning the indigenous local tribes that bravely fought to repel the encroaching settlers who they saw as invaders.
