The town of McCleary, Washington is named for Henry McCleary who first moved to the area in 1897 to establish two sawmills and a door manufacturing company. Although he would eventually sell the company in the 1940s, McCleary still took its name from the man in 1943 when it finally incorporated as a city.

McCleary is quite a small town in the rugged countryside of western Washington. The peaceful community sits approximately halfway between Olympia, the state capital of Washington, and the incredible Washington coastline. Furthermore, McCleary is practically surrounded by forest, and between the nearby beaches, mountains, and cities, McCleary is an excellent place to rent an RV.

Once you've decided to book an RV in McCleary, you may want to plan your visit around the McCleary Bear Festival. This strange but exciting festival takes place in early July each summer, with parades, dances, concerts, sporting competitions, and of course, lots of bear stew, a favorite local delicacy.

Discover McCleary

Experience the Sites and Scenery

Washington is an absolute pleasure to explore, especially if you rent an RV and have the flexibility to check out several different areas of the state. Heading out to the coast, for instance, will yield some pretty memorable experiences, like seeing the sun set over the vast Pacific Ocean. Westport Light State Park is a lovely little park in Westport on the North Bay, where you can hike, stroll the beaches looking for seashells, fish, birdwatch, and much more. The park is also home to the tallest lighthouse in Washington, a historic landmark that can be toured by park visitors. Grayland Beach State Park is a much smaller park but every bit as stunning as Westport Light State Park. Grayland Beach can be found a short drive south of Westport on the coast. There are hundreds of acres of sand dunes, grasslands, and, of course, pristine beaches that make for great beachcombing and hiking. Fishing and clamming are both fun activities that can even net you a delicious campfire supper when you camp out on in your McCleary RV rental.

Capitol State Forest is quite close to McCleary and easy to get to when you rent an RV in the small town. Visitors to the forest like to ride horses on the wooded nature trails or rip through the backwoods on ATVs and dirt bikes. Hiking over hilly terrain through dense coniferous forests, or mountain biking over various ridges and valleys can be exhilarating too. There are some bizarre geological features called the Mima Mounds in Capitol State Forest that are small, domelike mounds that exist in only a few places on Earth.

It would be crazy to omit Olympic National Park from the list, since it is only a half an hour's drive north of McCleary, and among the most popular national parks in the USA. Together with Olympic National Forest, the park makes up well over one and a half million acres of mountain peaks, rugged coastline, wetlands, and temperate rainforest. There are hundreds of miles to hike, and hidden hot springs to backpack to in the remote stretches of wilderness. Mount Olympus is the most prominent peak in the Olympic Range found in the park and these snowcapped giants can be seen from Seattle on clear days. Some of the best natural campgrounds in the Evergreen State are located in this incredible park so it is recommended that you stay a few nights with your McCleary RV rental by owner.

Where to Park It

Finding a suitable campground or RV park should be easy when you book an RV rental near McCleary. Elma RV Park has cozy campsites and an assortment of amenities. There is a work center for digital nomads to get stuff done, and a library of both books and movies for guests to sift through.

Travel Inn RV Resort is also located in nearby Elma along with Elma RV Park and could be another decent place to park for the night while you rest. The park has its own swimming pool, volleyball and basketball courts, sports fields, and a clubhouse.

Little Creek Casino and Resort has an RV park too. There are pools, hot tubs, several restaurants and bars, shopping boutiques, a spa, a fitness center, and a golf course at this diverse destination.

City Attractions

If you are wondering what to do while in town in between wilderness treks and beach trips, there are a few fascinating museums you could visit. The McCleary Museum at the Carnell House is a lovely place to visit and learn about the town’s past. This historic home is packed with black and white photographs, memorabilia, artifacts, and more. It is only open on the weekends, but there are knowledgeable volunteers on hand to lead you on a trip through time.

In nearby Aberdeen, you can visit the Aberdeen Museum of History, another historical resource teeming with information. There are beautifully handcrafted canoes and other indigenous objects and art that are well preserved and a sight to behold.

In Olympia, you can visit the original home of Henry McCleary, the first settler to move to town in the 19th century. The house was designed by architect Joseph Wohleb for one of the richest timber barons in all of Washington. This gorgeous mansion is now a historical landmark and available for tours.
