If you are planning to rent an RV and go somewhere no one knows you, or head to some small and calm place to avoid the fast pace of a rushing city, or to simply change your surroundings and explore some new location for a short period of time, then Merrimac, MA could be a great place to start your journey. A small town located in Essex County, Massachusetts and housing some 7 thousand residents, Merrimac was once known as a fishing and agricultural settlement, established in 1638. Later on, the settlement developed further and in the nineteenth century, due to manufacturing boom, Merrimac became known for its horse-drawn carriage manufacturing industry. But as automobile magnates later annihilated the horse-carriage industry, Merrimac quickly transformed into a mainly residential area and its industry was relocated towards the Midwest.

The town of Merrimac is located some 35 miles northeast of Boston and some 10 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean – this location makes it a great place to go to if you wish to breathe a bit of fresh air, just remove yourself from the craze of a big city, and take a rental RV in Merrimac for a spin. The town also rests calmly on the Merrimac River on the south and there is a beautiful lake, Lake Attitash, located to the northeast of the town.

The Great Outdoors

Lulled between Lake Attitash to the northeast, the Merrimac River to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Merrimac is a great place to go to if you are looking for fantastic outdoor activities the whole family can experience in the beautiful weather. Even if you decide just to stroll around town, you are bound to see the beautifully preserved architecture from eighteenth and nineteenth century, and if you just go to the outskirts of the town, amazing nature awaits you.

One of the best places to go to is the Indian Head Park and Well Sites, as there is plenty of room there to have a nice, relaxing picnic by the Lake Attitash, or in the shade some distance further from the lake. You can also take a swim in the lake, as the shore is well kept. Or, if you wish to cast a line, head to the outskirts of Indian Head Park and just throw the hook, sit back and relax, and just fish to your heart’s content. There are also a lot of amenities in the park itself, as you can walk and cycle on the trails, make use of the fire pits and picnic areas, even find a couple of playgrounds for the children.

If you are booking an RV rental in Merrimac, another great activity to partake in is boat rental. Lake Attitash is a fairly large lake, so exploring it by boat can bring great fun to you and the whole family.

There is also a great, well-kept, long trail that goes through the town of Merrimac, the Jay McLaren Memorial Trail. Feel free to simply experience nature within the town, enjoy the great landscape and have some fun!

RV Parks

There are no designated RV parks in Merrimac itself, however, there are several campgrounds around Lake Attitash where you can take your rental camper.

The closest place is Tuxbury Road RV resort just over the state line in South Hampton, New Hampshire. This is a great park to go to and still be able to explore Merrimac, as this RV park is located just five miles away. It has all the amenities you’ll need for your stay – there is pull-thru access as well as  big rig access, a pool within the premises of the resort and on top of that – there is a lake waterfront access! Better still, the resort is pet-friendly, so you can bring your furry family member with you.

As Merrimac is a small town, it does not have a Walmart Supercenter, however, there is one just twelve miles to the east, so you needn’t worry about running out of supplies.

On the other hand, you’ll find plenty of gas stations locally, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to fuel up your rental RV in Merrimac.

Exploring the City

There are several annual events you can plan into your excursion to Merrimac, including Merrimac Old Home days, an event in August which has great activities like miniature golf, and even a dunk tank, and the Merrimac Santa Parade, when Santa visits every street in Merrimac on Christmas Eve.

There are also other places of interest you can visit and just enjoy, such as Merrimac Town Forest, Merrimacport (the oldest section of Merrimac), Merrimac Square, and many others. All these locations help you experience the true spirit of 18th and 19th century America and simply have the power to take you back in time to experience the essence of the past.

If you decide to rent a motorhome in Merrimac, you will not be disappointed!
