Pendleton is a small city in northeast Oregon. The town began as a small trading post in 1851, built by Dr. William C. McKay, which would slowly develop into a commercial hub and town later on. Originally, the name of Pendleton was Marshall, before being switched over to its present-day name upon being incorporated in 1880.

The town’s motto claims that Pendleton is “the Real West,” a homage to its incredibly complex and engrossing pass. The center of town is a recognized historic district, with plenty of old western style buildings and old brick structures, reminiscent of a Spaghetti Western movie. When you book an RV in Pendleton, you can spend your time touring local museums, visiting the popular rodeo in town, or heading out into Oregon’s vast wilderness to collect your thoughts and reconnect with nature. Interstate 84 ensures easy access to Pendleton, connecting the small city with some of the region’s biggest cities like Boise in Idaho and Portland in Oregon. No matter where go in your Pendleton camper rental, you are bound to fall in love with one of the most beautiful and welcoming states in the country.

The Great Outdoors

There are many reasons one might choose to rent an RV in Oregon, but the spectacular parks and forests in the state are by far the most exciting. No matter where you find yourself in The Beaver State, Oregon is bound to impress you with places like Hat Rock State Park. Hat Rock State Park is named for Hat Rock, a large and peculiarly shaped basalt rock formation that is over twelve million years old. This delightful park has scenic vistas overlooking the Columbia River, as well as hiking trails and a campground to stay with your Pendleton motorhome rental. Right next to the park, there are a series of recreation areas along the Columbia River where you can also camp or explore. Sand Station Recreation Area and Warehouse Beach Recreation Area are both hidden gems, so staying overnight is a surefire way to get some peace and quiet. These small campgrounds have their own swimming areas and sandy beaches for a whole host of summertime activities you can take part in.

Cottonwood Canyon State Park and Cottonwood Canyon Recreation Area together form a large contiguous area of public land that is ideal for outdoor fun. These conjoined parks are only two hours’ drive away when you hit the road in your Pendleton RV rental and seek out some of Oregon’s prettiest places. The two parks are separated by the meandering John Day River that cuts through the arid habitat, with lush riparian habitats and gorgeous canyons. Camping, hiking, fishing, river rafting, and swimming are all possible at Cottonwood Canyon, and there is lots of wildlife to observe and photograph if you bring your camera.

Just a bit farther away from Pendleton, Mount Hood National Forest presents a can’t-miss opportunity. This incredible paradise is named for Mount Hood, a massive stratovolcano that can be seen from far away. There is nothing better than hiking to the summit of this breathtaking yet treacherous mountain, surrounded by wildflower-laden meadows and alpine lakes. If you just want to relax, there are several campgrounds where you can stay overnight with your Pendleton travel trailer rental and lots of easy hiking trails to explore.

RV Parks

When you pick up your Pendleton motorhome rental, you may want to spend some time in one or two of the area’s campgrounds or RV parks, and luckily, there are a few options to choose from. Pendleton KOA has lots of spacious campsites for large recreation vehicles, in addition to a camp kitchen, bathrooms, showers, a pavilion, and a pet park.

Pilot RV Park is just off Interstate 84, with its own unique features and amenities. There are self-service laundry facilities, bathrooms and showers, shaded campsites, and more at this pet-friendly facility.

Wildhorse Resort & Casino is next to a massive casino, a championship quality golf course, live concerts and comedy shows, fine dining, a cinema, a pool, and a fitness center for guests to utilize.

City Attractions

For such a small city, Pendleton has lots of exciting and memorable experiences to enjoy. From its charming historic downtown district to its distinct western style, walking around and taking in the sights is the first thing you should do when you rent an RV here. If you want to learn as much as you can about the history of Umatilla County and Pendleton, you are in luck; places like the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute are great resources for doing so. This amazing heritage site has guided tours given by native indigenous people who share their culture with guests. There are items and artifacts on display telling the story of the natives and their struggle to deal with the encroaching settlers during the westward expansion. The Heritage Station Museum also dives into a bit of Pendleton history, focusing on the trains and railways that once served the town, as well as a broadened view of local history. There are historical photographs and antiques on display, further painting a vivid picture of the area throughout the last several hundred years.

The casino on the eastern outskirts of town is a place to enjoy some stellar nightlife while spending time on its massive gaming floor. The resort has every imaginable amenity, live entertainment on the weekends, first-class restaurants, and much more.

Another attraction in town is the Pendleton Round-Up, one of the nation’s best rodeos. This Wild West atmosphere is a great place to catch your first rodeo, with talented professionals performing and competing in a variety of ways.
