Situated along the Yakima River, Prosser is the seat of Benton County in the south of Washington State and the heart of the surrounding wine country. It was first surveyed by Colonel William Farrand Prosser in 1879 before the first tracks of the Northern Pacific Railroad were laid five years later, with Prosser officially incorporated in 1899.

Today, Prosser is a popular place to rent an RV for those wanting to explore the wineries of the Yakima Valley and the surrounding recreational reserves. It’s well served by RV campsites while being just three hours’ drive from both Seattle and Portland.

Discover Prosser

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Prosser and make the short drive west to the Sunnyside Wildlife Recreation Area, which is one of the largest gathering places for migrating waterfowl in the Yakima River Valley. It encompasses around 2,800 acres of lowland riparian habitat, freshwater marshes, and wetlands. Follow one of the walking trails to spot rufous hummingbirds and peregrine falcons, together with Swainson’s hawks and bald eagles.

Around an hour’s drive north of Prosser is the Hanford Reach National Monument, which is named after the last non-tide, free-flowing section of the Columbia River. It was historically home to the ancestors of the Yakama and Wanapum people while today it provides a refuge for 48 rare, threatened, or endangered animal species. Witness the Vernita Bridge that spans the Columbia River or soak up the viticultural landscapes on the Wahluke Slope.

Prosser also makes a good base for visiting the Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge, which lies on and around the Columbia River near the border between Washington and Oregon. It was established in 1969 to provide a refuge for birds and wildlife, with a diversity of habitats that include shallow marsh, seasonal wetlands, and shrub-steppe uplands. It’s strategically located along the Pacific Flyway to provide a wintering site and resting point for Arctic nesting geese and ducks while also being home to mule deer, kangaroo rats, and sagebrush lizards.

RV Parks

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Prosser and check into the Wine Country RV Park, which nestles in the picturesque Lower Yakima Valley. This pet-friendly park has 125 sites with full hookups, as well as an outdoor swimming pool with a hot tub, a children’s playground, a basketball court, and complimentary Wi-Fi.

A 20-minute drive east of Prosser takes you to the Beach RV Park in Benton City, which overlooks the beautiful Yakima River. There are spacious, grassy sites with full hookups and modern restrooms, with your four-legged friends welcome to stay with you.

Continue driving east, and you’ll arrive at the Columbia Sun RV Resort in Kennewick, which offers 20, 30, and 50-amp services, together with Wi-Fi and picnic tables. Select between their regular back-in sites, deluxe, and supreme sites with patios, with room to accommodate RVs up to 90 feet in length.

Or, you can make the 20-minute drive to Sunnyside and its Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Prosser and spend a day touring the nearly 40 wineries that dot the region. Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon are among the most popular varietals grown while around 80% of the United States’ hop production also takes place here. Aside from grapes, the Yakima Valley is also renowned for its orchards, with plenty of places where you can buy seasonal peaches, pears, cherries, and plums.

If you’re interested in buying fresh produce, coincide your visit to Prosser with the Saturday morning Farmer's Market, which takes place in the Prosser City Park. In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, you can also find artisan bread, locally-made cheeses, and cut flowers. Grab a coffee and some homemade pastries to start the day, then browse the woven baskets and unique crafts for sale alongside locally-produced wines.

Also in Prosser City Park is the Benton County Museum & Historical Society where you can gain an insight into the people and events that have shaped the region. Learn about the evolution of a Native American fishery in a bend of the Yakima River at the Top Tat exhibit and discover how European-American homesteaders established a ranching industry here. Wander through the Victorian parlor and browse the antique firearms on display, then learn about the area’s native shrub-steppe ecosystem.

Prosser is home to a central supermarket where you can pick up groceries, as well as a handful of restaurants for dining out. There are also a couple of gas stations if you need to fill up your motorhome rental in Prosser.

Whether you’re visiting Benton County for its wine country or wildlife reserves, book an RV in Prosser and start planning your next adventure.
