It is located in a valley in the Appalachian Mountain Range and is divided by Taylors Ridge and White Oak Mountain, two ridges that run north-south and are separated by a gap just east of the city center. Rent an RV and park it here, so you can take in the breathtaking skyline from the comfort of your canopy shaded lawn chair, or head for the mountains to work off some steam before relaxing in the comfort of your Ringgold rental RV.

The Great Outdoors

Chattahoochee National Forest is directly east of Ringgold and is comprised of two forests, the eastern and the western. The western forest includes Johns Mountain and Little Sand Mountain, in addition to Taylor Ridge. Begin your trek with a scenic drive in your Ringgold rental motorhome and your oasis will be waiting for you when you have finished walking. There are 450 miles of hiking and other recreation trails within Chattahoochee, which provides the opportunity to see many different species of bird and animal life. Ten wildernesses within the forest are part of the National Wilderness Preservation System, so visitors are encouraged to treat the ecosystem with care and limit their impact on the forest as much as possible.

To the west of Ringgold, you will find the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park, the site of two major Civil War battles. Stop into the visitors center to get the park guide, which contains a driving tour and a website address where you can download an audio supplement; from Wilder Monument, just a short walk up a hill, you will have unfettered views of the entire battlefield.

Farther west still, Lookout Mountain is a city but also exactly what the name implies. From here you will have 360-degree views of the area, and may even be able to see the Tennessee River just to the north, across the state line in Tennessee. This area provides some great walking and hiking trails through the natural wilderness, and photo ops for the camera bug in all of us.

Exploring The City

Ringgold is not without a few antique stores, not surprising given its historical importance. Visitors to Ringgold can take their time doing a walking tour of the town and popping in and out of the stores as they please. Tourists who would like their nicknacks a little more current can check out Hamilton Place Mall in nearby Chattanooga.

First-time visitors will absolutely not want to miss the Historic Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel in nearby Tunnel Hill. The venue offers a museum, a walking self-guided tour (the audio tour is provided via your mobile phone) and a guided golf cart tour of the tunnel itself.

Nearby Rossville has the Lake Winnie Amusement Park, which opened in 1925; it has all of the typical amusement park rides and also a water park. The water park has slides and a floating river which is both lazy river and wave pool. Snack counters add to the ambiance, making for a perfect day of relaxation, or excitement, or a combination of both.

When you have finished for the day and it is time to eat, Ringgold has a good selection of local restaurants who will welcome you openly. Prices range from cheap to moderately priced, and the cuisines are Mexican, mainstream American and barbecue, along with a handful of fast-food outlets to keep the younger kids happy. Ringgold's small size makes it a perfect opportunity to take a walking tour of the town sites and restaurants; one of the perks of being a local establishment is the chance to name your business anything you want, and a walking tour of the food outlets will reveal some interesting choices. These names alone make investigating the establishments further a necessity if only to scan the menu and see what other creative mysteries the venues have come up with. Better yet, finish your meal with a take-home dessert to enjoy in the comfort of your Ringgold camper rental.
