The city of Ruston lies in the far northern portion of Louisiana, near the border with Arkansas in a region known as Ark-La-Tex. It’s actually the largest city in the eastern region of Ark-La-Tex and serves as the home of Louisiana Tech University. Ruston is a popular tourist destination among hunters and anglers thanks to the abundant wildlife in the area and vast stretches of wilderness to explore.

Ruston is also famous for its festivals, which draw crowds from throughout the northern portion of the state. The Peach Festival, which takes places in June of each year, has musical performances, a 5k run, and, of course, lots of delicious peach-flavored treats. There’s also Railroad Fest in April, which is billed as a celebration of makers and music. It’s become one of the premier arts festivals in the state and is also a great place to experience the region’s delicious cuisine, as there are a number of food trucks in attendance there. But no matter what time of year you visit Ruston, there’s sure to be something interesting going on.

Discover Ruston

The Great Outdoors

The premier outdoor space to explore with an RV rental in Ruston is Lincoln Parish Park on the north side of town. The massive woodland space is crisscrossed by several hiking trails, and there’s a beautiful lake to swim and fish in (with the proper state license). Kayaks and canoes are available for rent from nearby sporting goods stores and are a common sight on the lake. The park also has a few campsites with full hookups if you’d like to stick close to town with the Ruston camper rental.

If you need a little more space for your paddling, consider taking a trip up to Lake D’Arbonne State Park outside Farmerville, which has over 15,000 acres to cruise around on. The park also offers an outdoor pool if you’d prefer a different swimming experience. A number of trails encircle the lake, and hiking one of them is an excellent opportunity to do some wildlife spotting.

One of the most popular places for a stroll or an invigorating jog, when you book an RV in Ruston, is the Rock Island Greenway. The greenway occupies an old railroad right of way, so the path is incredibly flat and easy enough for visitors of any fitness level.

RV Parks

There aren’t too many RV parks in northern Louisiana, so don’t be surprised if you need to do a little driving to get from the park to your intended attractions. Antique Village RV Park is one of the closest places to camp when you get a travel trailer rental in Ruston. It’s right off I-20 and sites there have full hookups, bathrooms, a dump station, and laundry facilities. If you’re thinking about visiting Shreveport when you rent an RV here, this is one of the more convenient places to stay.

Another option is Pavilion RV Park on the outskirts of Monroe. Many of their sites have full hookups, and there’s a truck stop just across the street if you need to use the dump station or fuel up your rig. Monroe is also one of the larger cities in northern Louisiana, so this could be a good place to camp if you prefer a more urban environment.

Those looking for a scenic camping spot for their motorhome rental near Ruston might enjoy Lake Claiborne State Park. Not only does it have a stunningly beautiful backdrop for your RV rental adventure, but their sites also have water and electrical hookups, kayaks and canoes can be rented for a nominal fee, and there are several great hiking trails that start on the edge of the park.

Exploring the City

Despite not being a household name when it comes to travel destinations, Ruston has quite a few attractions that will appeal to a wide variety of visitors. History buffs and military enthusiasts will be fascinated by the Louisiana Military Museum, which contains artifacts from just about every major conflict that the U.S. has participated in, including Civil War uniforms, World War I machine guns, and even a helicopter from the Korean War. There’s a lot packed into a rather small space, and museum officials have done an excellent job of laying out a narrative for each conflict that helps visitors to immerse themselves in history.

Those looking for a cultural experience will want to check out the Dixie Center for the Arts, a restored theater from the 1960s filled with plush red seats and antique light fixtures. Check their schedule for community theater performances. They also have special events that are worth stopping by for, particularly around the holidays.

Sports fans should plan an afternoon at Joe Aillet Stadium on the Louisiana Tech campus. If you can, try to catch a game against the Southern Miss Eagles, Tech’s chief rival.
