Named for the Stevenson family from Missouri who first settled along the Columbia River in the 19th century, Stevenson is a lovely riverside community in southern Washington. Although it is located in the gorgeous Evergreen State, it is more closely associated with the city of Portland, Oregon due to the relative proximity to one another. The town would slowly grow and expand in the latter half of the 19th century before becoming the Skamania County seat seemingly overnight. After the SP&S Railroad arrived in town, Stevenson would solidify itself as a regional hub for commerce, culture, and entertainment.
Stevenson is renowned for its phenomenal scenery, especially its gorgeous riverfront complete with scenic hiking and jogging paths. No matter what time of year you decide to book an RV in Stevenson, you can enjoy the peaceful, relaxing vibes as well as the large wilderness areas full of wild animals and picturesque views. There are countless national parks and forests in both Oregon and Washington that you can put on your itinerary, and cities like Salem, Portland, Olympia, and Seattle are not out of the question for long distance Stevenson RV rental road trip destinations.
Depending on which direction you head after you rent an RV in Stevenson, there are a wide variety of amazing outdoors landmarks and parks you can visit, each with their own unique characteristics. Spring Creek Hatchery State Park lies on the northern banks of the Columbia River, a great place to have a picnic, go fishing, or take photos of the wildlife. Although it is small in physical size, the park is lovingly referred to as “the Hatch,” and known for its kiteboarding and windsurfing area on the Columbia River. The winds are strong, and the park is only recommended for those considered experts.
On the other side of the Columbia River in northern Oregon, you will also notice there are lots of state parks lining the water’s edge, like Lang State Park, Lindsey Creek State Park, and Viento State Park. Viento State Park is located outside of Hood River in Oregon, and it is also known as a popular windsurfing destination. There are excellent campgrounds with views of the river where you will be tempted to stay with your Stevenson camper rental. Riverfront access, scenic hiking trails, and fishing are also wonderful reasons to give this park a chance. Wygant State Park is close by, also on the Oregon side of the river. This park has no facilities, but despite this, it remains a fantastic place to visit when you rent an RV. This densely forested, riverfront paradise has jaw-dropping views of the river gorge. There are abandoned roads, desolate prairies, and desert areas within the park that are great for photography.
Gifford Pinchot National Forest envelops the riverfront village of Stevenson. When you rent an RV in town, you hardly have to drive at all to enjoy the sprawling forest, but with almost two million acres, there is lots of territory to cover and explore. The forest contains stratovolcanoes, old-growth forests, ancient glaciers, and mountains. Mount Adams is the tallest peak in the park at over 12,000 feet tall, and the Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument can be found within the park too
One of the fortunate parts about picking up a camper rental in Stevenson is that there are lots of accommodating RV parks nearby where you can stay overnight. Wind Mountain RV Park is not far from town and is surrounded by natural beauty. This family-owned park allows long and short-term stays and is great for fishing in the river.
Timberlake Campground & RV Park is another nearby option worth considering. The park has lots of spacious camping sites near the river, with a playground, a meeting hall, and restroom facilities.
Cascade Locks/Portland East KOA lies on the other side of the river in Oregon but is easy to reach and full of fun amenities. There is a refreshing pool, a snack bar, a hot tub, a sauna, and bicycle rentals on site.
Stevenson is a vibrant riverfront town, so naturally, there are some fun ways to spend a day while you have some extra time. There is an abundance of breweries, restaurants, boutiques, art galleries, adventure tour companies, and golf courses in the area, so there's always something to do.
The Bonneville Lock & Dam spans the Columbia River, connecting Oregon and Washington. Here you can gaze out onto the river and see rainbows reflecting off the water particles of the cascading waterfalls, or tour the visitor center and learn about the enormous feat of engineering. You can even take a photo with the Bigfoot Statue at the dam.
Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center is the area’s undisputed resource for all things pertaining to the history of the Columbia River Gorge as well as Skamania County. You can absorb mountains of knowledge from tour guides, specifically about the fascinating natural and cultural history of the region. You can see documentary films, historical artifacts, and other unique exhibits at this incredible institution should you choose to visit.
You can also take a drive over the Bridge of the Gods, an epic bridge spanning the river. This steel truss cantilever bridge provides stunning views of the river, and walking or biking across the river is perfectly acceptable too.
