Home to one of the only operating train turntables in the United States, Summerville was founded in 1838 as the seat of Chattooga County. It flourished with the construction of the Chattanooga Rome and Columbus Railroad, with its heritage-listed courthouse and train depot built during the early-20th century.

Just a stone’s throw from some of the Appalachian Mountains' trails and recreational lakes, Summerville is the ideal place to rent an RV. It’s within proximity to historic cities and Native American archaeological sites, not to mention the longest mountaintop river in the United States.

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your RV rental in Summerville and head to the James H. Floyd State Park, which sprawls across more than 500 acres at the base of Taylor Ridge. It’s surrounded by picturesque countryside and the Chattahoochee National Forest, with two lakes that are well stocked with fish, plus a boardwalk and a children’s playground. Follow one of the hiking trails that wind along the shores or embark on the 60-mile-long Pinhoti Trail through the southern Appalachian Mountains.

To the north lies Johns Mountain Wildlife Management Area - a 24,000-acre park that’s a haven for deer, bears, and small game. There are plenty of hiking and mountain biking trails to explore, as well as designated open tracks for horseback riders. If you’re a keen angler, you can try your luck at luring redear sunfish, bluegill, and largemouth bass in the waters of Lake Marvin.

Just across the border in Alabama is the Little River Canyon National Preserve, which perches atop Lookout Mountain. It protects what is considered the longest mountaintop river in the United States, the Little River, which has carved one of the deepest canyons in the Southeast. It’s popular with whitewater enthusiasts and home to three major waterfalls - the Little River Falls at the start of the canyon and DeSoto Falls, as well as the seasonal Grace’s High Falls.
