The RV Camper’s Guide to MLB Spring Training

Camping and baseball – have you ever thought about combining them together into the trip of a lifetime? Renting an RV makes that trip even more doable – and more fun.

Head down to Arizona or Florida this spring to catch your favorite MLB team training for the upcoming baseball season. Here’s what you need to know about RV camping at spring training.

Cactus League

MLB League

The MLB’s “Cactus League” takes place in Arizona. Fifteen teams train against each other in eleven different stadiums during the month of March. The stadiums are centered around the Phoenix Metropolitan Area as well as Tucson to the south.

There are dozens of quality campgrounds for RV campers to choose from. Look for one close to the stadium your favorite team will be playing at. The best MLB spring training RV parks include Cholla Campground in Tonto National Forest and McDowell Mountain Regional Park.

Be sure to check out nearby natural attractions like the Desert Botanical Garden (shown here), Tonto Natural Bridge Waterfall, and Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park. Families with young children will love the Phoenix Zoo, Butterfly Wonderland, and Verde Canyon Railroad.

Grapefruit League

The MLB’s “Grapefruit League” takes place in Florida. Unlike the Cactus League, every team has their own stadium during the month of March. The stadiums are scattered throughout the state with popular stadiums located in Sarasota, Tampa, and Fort Myers.

You have dozens of options for MLB spring training camping in Florida. Be sure to select a campground near the stadium your team is playing at. A few of the best RV campgrounds include Sun-n-Fun RV Resort in Sarasota (Baltimore Orioles) and Bay Bayou RV Resort in Tampa (New York Yankees).

Don’t forget to visit Florida’s beautiful beaches during your stay. Cocoa Beach, Melbourne Beach, and New Smyrna Beach are all good choices. Families with small children won’t want to miss Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando.

Find Your Team

Most western MLB teams compete in the Cactus League while most eastern MLB teams compete in the Grapefruit League. Exceptions are the Cleveland Indians, Milwaukee Brewers, and both Chicago teams competing in the Cactus League. Use the MLB’s spring training resource to find out exactly where your favorite team plays.

The best way to experience MLB spring training is from the comfort of an RV. Spend a relaxing night in a gorgeous Arizona or Florida campground before taking in a ballgame the next day. Use Outdoorsy to find the best RV for your MLB spring training RV camping trip.
