River Mill RV Park is a newer full-service RV resort off Highway 224 in Estacada, Oregon, in the foothills of the Mount Hood National Forest where the Clackamas River drains the western slopes of the Cascade Range through a landscape of Douglas fir forest, clear mountain streams, and reservoir-dotted ridge country. The park's 98 oversized full hookup sites were designed for the large modern rigs that older mountain campgrounds cannot accommodate, and the location provides simultaneous access to forest recreation, river fishing, and lake activities within minutes of the property. All 98 sites feature full hookups with pull-through access for big rigs, combined with WiFi, showers, and laundry in a clean, modern facility. A spacious recreation center with full kitchen handles indoor gatherings and group activities, and the pet-friendly policy accommodates travel animals throughout the property. Estacada Lake—a small reservoir created by the original River Mill Dam—is a two-minute drive from the campground's entrance, providing kayaking and paddleboarding access in a calm, sheltered setting that is more beginner-friendly than the moving water of the Clackamas. Downtown Estacada, four minutes away, provides restaurants, coffee shops, and the local commercial infrastructure that extends camping stays more comfortably. The Clackamas River, 15 minutes from the park, is one of the more productive wild steelhead rivers in the Oregon Coast Range drainages that intersect with the Cascade foothill country—the Clackamas's winter and summer steelhead runs, combined with its spring Chinook salmon fishery, have made it a river that serious Pacific Northwest anglers place alongside the better-known Deschutes and Sandy. The upper Clackamas corridor in the Mount Hood National Forest above Estacada transitions into increasingly wild and rugged terrain as it approaches the Opal Creek Wilderness, one of the most accessible old-growth forest ecosystems in Oregon, with ancient cedar, Douglas fir, and hemlock groves surrounding the mining-era buildings of the Jawbone Flats historic camp. Bagby Hot Springs, deep in the Mount Hood National Forest about 45 minutes from the park, provides the most distinctive day trip in the area: cedar-lined soaking tubs fed by geothermal spring water that flows through hand-hewn log channels to private-ish tub rooms scattered along a forest trail in a wild landscape far from the commercial hot spring infrastructure of most soaking destinations. The two-mile trail to the springs requires a short hike—about an hour round trip—and the primitive, non-commercial character of the facility is entirely consistent with the surrounding wilderness landscape. Milo McIver State Park, closer to Estacada on the Clackamas River, provides disc golf, equestrian trails, and river access in a more developed day-use setting. River Mill RV Park operates year-round in the foothills climate where Estacada's elevation provides a four-season camping environment—wet winters, spectacular spring wildflower seasons along the Clackamas corridor, dry summers ideal for forest hiking and lake recreation, and fall steelhead and salmon fishing that draws anglers from the Portland metropolitan area 45 minutes west. The park's modern infrastructure and large-site design fill a gap in the Mount Hood foothills' private campground inventory, and its position between the Portland metro and the mountain recreation of Highway 224 makes it a practical base for a wide range of Cascade foothills outdoor activities.
