The Retreat at Redwood Shores sits on 10 acres in Eureka, California, on the North Coast where the Humboldt Bay estuary meets the southern edge of the world's most significant coastal redwood forest ecosystem. The property offers cabins, RV sites, and tent sites in a setting that positions guests in the middle of the Redwood Coast's competing attractions: the Avenue of the Giants, accessible to the south, and the Redwood National and State Parks complex, accessible to the north, flank the resort in a corridor where the concentration of old-growth redwood per driving mile is unmatched anywhere on Earth. RV sites with full hookups, tent sites, and cabins of varying sizes provide the accommodation range for different camping styles, all on the 10-acre property landscaped with the coastal vegetation and ornamental planting that the Humboldt Bay climate supports year-round. An outdoor swimming pool, hot tub, mini-golf course, playground, giant chess and checkers, bocce ball, laundry, and a general store provide the on-site recreation that keeps guests occupied between redwood excursions. The pool is seasonal, and summer kids' programming—crafts and ice cream socials organized through the summer months—gives the resort a family-camp character that the broader Redwood Coast's independent campground options rarely provide. Showers and bathrooms are well-maintained throughout the property. Eureka anchors Humboldt County's coastal economy at the head of Humboldt Bay, the largest coastal bay between San Francisco Bay and the Columbia River—an estuary of marshes, mudflats, and open water that provides critical habitat for migratory shorebirds on the Pacific Flyway and supports the commercial Dungeness crab and oyster fisheries that define Humboldt Bay's working waterfront character. The Old Town Eureka historic district preserves the Victorian commercial architecture of a late-nineteenth-century lumber and fishing port in a collection of elaborately ornamented storefronts and residential buildings, including the Carson Mansion—widely considered the most elaborate Victorian house in the United States. The Avenue of the Giants, 15 minutes south of Eureka, traverses 31 miles through Humboldt Redwoods State Park in the Eel River drainage, passing through the Rockefeller Forest—the world's largest remaining old-growth coast redwood forest—in a corridor where individual trees exceed 350 feet in height and 20 feet in diameter. Redwood National Park, about 50 miles north, extends the protected redwood corridor through Del Norte County and the Klamath River canyon in a UNESCO World Heritage Site that connects the coastal and inland redwood ecosystems. Humboldt Bay's estuary boat tours provide a water-level perspective on the bay's wildlife and the Victorian architecture of Eureka's waterfront from an angle unavailable from land. The Retreat at Redwood Shores operates year-round in Humboldt County's coastal climate—mild, fog-influenced temperatures year-round, with the driest and warmest conditions from late June through September, and the dramatic winter storms of November through March that make the Redwood Coast one of the West's most compelling storm-watching environments. The Avenue of the Giants Marathon each May and the Humboldt Crab Fest in the spring anchor the local events calendar, and summer reservations for the resort's cabin accommodation book quickly given the Redwood Coast's limited private lodging inventory.
