Smoky Hill RV Park

Campground in Junction City, KS • 50 RV Sites

Smoky Hill RV Park sits at I-70 Exit 299 in Junction City, Kansas, in the Flint Hills corridor where the Smoky Hill River and Republican River join before entering the Milford Reservoir—a modern, full-service park built in 2020 with infrastructure designed for the contemporary traveling RV community, adjacent to the Fort Riley military installation and positioned as the cleanest and most fully equipped overnight and extended-stay option on the I-70 corridor between Salina and Manhattan. The park's new construction gives it consistent high ratings from travelers who value modern facilities in a part of the Great Plains where RV infrastructure quality can vary considerably. All sites are full hookup with 30 and 50-amp electric service, water, sewer, free high-speed WiFi, cable TV, picnic tables, and grills. The park's bathhouse doubles as a storm shelter—an important safety feature in Kansas's tornado-prone corridor—and houses the laundry room (three washers and four dryers) and clean shower facilities. A dog park accommodates traveling pets, a dump station serves self-contained units, and an on-site propane fill removes the need to hunt for a propane supplier in an unfamiliar town. Pull-through sites accommodate big rigs, and nightly, weekly, and extended-stay rates make the park flexible for both overnight corridor travelers and longer-term stays serving the Fort Riley community. Junction City anchors the Geary County economy in the heart of the Flint Hills—the largest remaining expanse of tallgrass prairie in North America, stretching from Nebraska to Oklahoma on the limestone bedrock that resisted the plow conversion that eliminated the majority of the American prairie. The Flint Hills' rolling terrain of big bluestem, indiangrass, and the characteristic bluestem pastures that ranchers have maintained for over a century through controlled burning create a landscape that surprises travelers expecting the flat, featureless plains of popular imagination. The tallgrass prairie's spring burning season in March and April, when ranchers ignite the dormant grass to stimulate the following year's growth, produces spectacular columns of smoke and fire visible across the hills. Fort Riley, the historic Army installation immediately west of Junction City at Exit 301, has been one of the central Great Plains' primary military establishments since the 1850s and preserves significant historical resources: the Custer House museum (the preserved quarters of George Armstrong Custer during his Fort Riley assignment), the 1st Infantry Division Museum, and the historic parade ground and limestone buildings of the post's nineteenth-century core. Milford Lake, 15 minutes from the park, is Kansas's largest reservoir at 15,700 acres and provides the fishing, boating, and beach recreation that anchor Geary County's outdoor recreation economy—the lake's walleye, wipers (white bass-striped bass hybrids), catfish, and white bass fishing draws anglers from across the region. Smoky Hill RV Park operates year-round as a Flint Hills corridor destination and I-70 travel stop, with the spring burn season and the Milford Lake fishing season generating the most destination-specific demand. Kansas State University in Manhattan, 30 minutes west on I-70, provides the cultural and commercial infrastructure of a university city including the Konza Prairie Biological Station—a 8,616-acre native tallgrass prairie preserve with public hiking trails—for travelers who want direct prairie access in a research-quality setting. Reserve ahead for major Fort Riley events and Manhattan game weekends when the I-70 corridor's lodging fills completely.
