Lewis & Clark Campground and RV Park sits in North Bonneville, Washington, in the Columbia River Gorge—a stretch of the gorge where the river cuts through the Cascades in a corridor of waterfalls, basalt cliffs, and old-growth Douglas fir that has been managed as a National Scenic Area since 1986. The campground's position in the gorge, set among established old timber with mountain views, makes it one of the most scenically situated private campgrounds in the Washington Cascades, and its proximity to Beacon Rock, the Bonneville Dam, and the gorge's extensive trail network positions it well for visitors making extended use of the gorge's recreation and historical resources. RV sites with water and electric hookups, picnic tables, and fire pits accommodate RV campers alongside tent camping areas. Clean restrooms and showers, a banquet room, and an indoor social area capable of hosting large groups and club gatherings make the campground functional for organized group visits as well as independent travelers. A dump station, propane exchange, and pet-friendly policy handle the practical camping needs. Guests should know that freight trains pass on nearby tracks through the night—a reality of the gorge's commercial transportation corridor that is audible from the campground and worth factoring into sleeping-comfort expectations. Beacon Rock State Park, five minutes from the campground, protects the 848-foot basalt monolith that Lewis and Clark identified in their 1805 journals and named for its navigational prominence above the river—Beacon Rock is the second largest monolith in the Western Hemisphere after the Rock of Gibraltar, and the 1.8-mile trail that switchbacks up its southeast face delivers summit views of the gorge in both directions that rank among the best viewpoints in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The park's hiking network on the north side of the river provides additional trail access to viewpoints, waterfalls, and the Hardy Creek drainage in a quieter environment than the Oregon side's heavily trafficked trail corridors. The Bonneville Dam Fish Hatchery, five minutes from the campground, is one of the largest salmon hatcheries operated by the Army Corps of Engineers and provides public access to the fish ladder and the hatchery pools where chinook salmon, coho, and steelhead can be observed in various life stages. The sturgeon ponds, where white sturgeon in excess of 10 feet and 500 pounds can be viewed in open display, are consistently the most popular attraction for visitors who have never encountered the largest freshwater fish in North America at close range. The Bridge of the Gods at Cascade Locks—the crossing of the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail over the Columbia—is about 10 minutes east. Lewis & Clark Campground operates through the Columbia River Gorge season in a climate where the gorge's unique east-west orientation creates distinctly different weather on its eastern and western ends, with the North Bonneville area occupying the wet western gorge where annual rainfall is higher and the Douglas fir forest is most lush. Multnomah Falls and the Oregon-side waterfall corridor are a short drive west for the most waterfall-dense hiking in the Pacific Northwest. The gorge's east wind that makes Hood River a world-class windsurfing destination diminishes at North Bonneville's position but still moderates summer temperatures in a way that makes the gorge comfortable when the Portland basin is hot.
