The California State Fair ranks among the oldest fairs in the United States. The first annual event took place way back in 1854, in San Francisco. Even though the fair was supposed to change host cities every year, the fair has only known the Capital of California as its home since 1968.
Each year, during the scorching days of July, Sacramento hosts this incredibly popular state fair and welcomes guests from all over the globe. Tickets
Tickets for the California State Fair can be purchased either from the fair's official website or directly at the California Expo's gate every day during the event. Transportation
Driving
The California State Fair, held at Cal Expo, is located at 1600 Exposition Blvd, Sacramento, CA. If you are arriving from Los Angeles, you can expect your ride to take around six hours. If you are coming from San Francisco, it may take you about 90 minutes to reach Sacramento via I-80. Major roads that lead to the fair are Highway 99, Interstate 5, Highway 70, Highway 80, and I-80.
Parking areas
Ample parking is usually available at Cal Expo, but RV motorists may want to call ahead and find out if larger rigs will be accommodated for day parking. Aside from featuring standard car and motorcycle parking lots, there are spaces to lock bicycles for the day. Parking lots can be found near four major gates, the Main Gate, the Rodeo Gate, the Blue Gate, and the Green Gate. Cash is the only form of payment accepted for parking.
Public Transportation
If you don't want to bother with Sacramento's traffic from a nearby campsite, you may want to consider public transportation. The cheapest options may include local bus or light rail services. There are at least seven stations near the fairgrounds that may be easily navigated on foot. Travelers can also look for affordable taxi services, shuttle services, or other private hire transportation in the area.

The Cal Expo RV Park welcomes visitors to camp and absorb the fair's offerings in leisure. Daily, weekly, and monthly rates are offered but may be limited for some dates. Hookups, wifi, and laundry are usually among the available amenities. If spots are full for the dates that you desire, don't let this discourage you. Sacramento is home to a number of locations where you can explore the natural beauty of California, as you rest and relax with your family and friends.
Nearby
If you plan to travel to the fair in your RV and set up camp, you may want to consider one of the RV Parks or resorts scattered around Sacramento if camping spaces are not available at the fairgrounds. Just north of the fair's location, travelers can find a couple of RV parks, which feature plenty of parking space, hookup options, and plenty of natural attractions to explore and experience. You may also want to head a few miles west from the fair to camp and observe the wildlife of California. Be sure to call ahead to ensure that a campsite will be available at your chosen location.
Getting around
Navigating the crowds can be tricky if you are not sure where to go for your favorite sites and exhibitions. A map of Cal Expo can be obtained from the Cal Expo site of the fair's website. California State Fair attractions and activities will usually list a location along with their information, but fair staff and security are present to help direct guests when needed. Renting an electric scooter or wheelchair can be done online or by phone.
What to pack
Clothing
California in July tends to be hot. Bring lightweight, summer clothes including t-shirts, sundresses, skirts, quick-dry items, and comfortable shoes. For sun protection, don't forget to pack a pair of sunglasses, in addition to a hat or a cap. Pack simple rain gear, just in case.
Gear
For camping, you may want to bring a grill, kitchen equipment, games for evening relaxation time, bug spray, allergy medicine, and a flashlight. For at the fair, make sure to have plenty of fresh water (plastic bottles only) and snacks. Of course, you will need your ticket and ID as well when entering the fairgrounds.
Health & Safety
Guests can expect plenty of hot days during the California State Fair. Make sure to bring sunscreen with you, and don't hesitate to take a break in one of many indoor locations, in case the sun gets too strong. Also, if you plan to explore the outdoor spaces around Sacramento, make sure to have a first aid kit with you, as well as an effective bug repellent.

If you prefer a cuisine that is within walking distance, a brisk twenty-minute walk can bring you to various options north of Cal Expo.

One of the main attractions of the fair will undoubtedly be food. This is not surprising, given that there will be more than 120 vendors offering their best products. Aside from purchasing delicious food, you will be able to shop for other things as well. Be sure to check out the large Indoor Bazaar, where you will find a plethora of home items, gadgets, and the latest and greatest clothing items.
Safety
Security
To ensure the safety and well-being of all visitors, the California State Fair's security personnel will search all bags, backpacks, and handbags upon entry. You will be able to bring in non-alcoholic drinks, food, and ice chests, but not alcohol, glass bottles, or aluminum cans.

Weather
In July, guests can expect warm days and very little rain. Lightweight clothing and items that can help you battle the heat are ideal. Check the local Sacramento weather forecast before you embark on your adventure. Fair authorities will provide announcements in the event of severe weather, but remember to inquire if needed.
Medical
Cal Expo features a First Aid Station in the vicinity of the fair's main gate. There will also be multiple Mommy stations with air conditioning and comfortable seating. If you have a medical condition that may require assistance or need to have a particular medication with you contacting fair officials in advance may help in planning your trip.
