Introduction

Legion State Park is one of the original state parks developed by the Civilian Conversation Corps in the early 1900’s and remains as unspoiled as it was when it was set up. Located in the Red Hill county of Mississippi, two miles north of Louisville on North Columbus Avenue, the park is the perfect blend of natural beauty and modern comfort, with its man-made structures that complement the beauty of the natural features in the park and make it a great RV camping destination. The Legion Lodge,made with hand-hewn logs and located in the northern part of the park, was constructed in the 1930’s and remains as beautiful and unaltered as it was back then.

Legion State Park features 15 RV camping sites, 12 primitive campsites, six cabins, and one lodge. The RV campsites are available for RV and tents and are equipped with electric, water, and sewer hookups for RVs. In addition, picnic tables, grills, and a bathhouse with hot showers are available at the RV camps. Other amenities and facilities available in the park include a boat ramp and an archery. Activities at the park include boating, fishing, hiking, picnicking, wildlife viewing, as well as park events. RV campers also enjoy visits to historical sites at Legion State Park.

The cabins in the park are equipped with bed and bath linens, basic kitchen equipment and, a stone fireplace. The lodge in the park is ADA accessible and features central air and heat facilities.

Transportation

Driving

Legion State Park is located two miles north of Louisville on North Columbus Avenue, Mississippi, and is an easy drive-in park for RVs, trailers, and other vehicles. The RV campsites, primitive campsites, cottages, and pavilion in the park are easy to access due to the presence of local roads connecting them. There are no driving restrictions for RVs in the park within specified limits.

Parking

There are spaces for parking RVs and trailers at the campsites for campers in Legion State Park. So, you don’t have any reason to worry about where to park your rig while at the park. Overnight parking facilities are also available in the park.

Public Transportation

There are no public transportation facilities available at Legion State Park.

Reservations camping

Legion Loop

Legion Loop in Legion State Park features 15 standard pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents. The campground is equipped with electric, water, and sewer hookups for RVs. RV length limit at the campground is 40 feet. Amenities available at the campground include bathhouse with hot showers, fire grills, and playground. The loop is easily accessible using the local road in the park. Smoking is not allowed in the campground.

In-Season

Hiking

At Legion State Park, RV campers and vacationers enjoy hiking on the one and a half-mile-long nature trail that encircles the Legion Lake. Hikers find walking along the trail easy to moderate in difficulty, and enjoy close views of native birds, plants and wildlife on the trail. Even more, the proximity of the trail to the 12-acre lake offers campers scenic views of the lake and surrounding vegetation.

Picnicking

You are sure to enjoy picnicking at any of the picnic areas at Legion State Park. Whether you’re alone on the RV trip, or with family and/or friends, the amazing picnic areas, equipped with picnic tables, grills, and picnic shelters will make your experience memorable. Besides, the large picnic pavilion in the park that’s an ideal setting for group occasions, such as reunions, company picnics, and other gatherings is added feature for enjoyment for picnic lovers.

Fishing

Anglers and RV campers at Legion State Park enjoy fishing on the 12-acre Legion Lake and four-acre Palila Lake. Both lakes offer wonderful fishing opportunities for campers in a picturesque wooded setting. The lake is replete with bass and bream. Bluegill and redear are also found in the lakes. All campers and anglers between 16 and 65 years of age require a Mississippi fishing license to fish in Legion State Park. The license can be acquired from the park office.

Off-Season

Archery

Located close to the entrance within Legion State Park is an archery spot for lovers of archery to enjoy. The woods and vegetation in the park as well as the location of the archery point far from camping sites and lodges make it a beautiful environment for both professional archers and beginners to test out their accuracy and skills. So, prepare to shoot some arrows while at the park.

Boating

Legion Lake and Palila Lake at Legion State Park are open to boating activities for RV campers. Hence vacationers at the park can enjoy boating on both lakes while at the park. A boat ramp is available on the Legion Lake in the northern end of the park.

Park Events

Legion State Park offers numerous events at various times of the year for RV campers and vacationers to participate in. Some of these events include Easter Hunt (in March/April), Easter Sunrise Services (in March/April), Red Hills Craft Festival (in May), Christmas Tree Trimming Party (in December). The Christmas Tree Trimming, caroling, food, and children's crafts take place at Legion's Lodge in the park.
