Overview

Oak Cabin attracts outdoor enthusiasts ranging from mountain bikers to hunters to those who love riding off-road. The somewhat remote, semi-rustic cabin provides an ideal resting spot among aspen trees and mountain scenery.

One of three cabins in the area, Oak Cabin was built in the 1930s for use by Forest Service employees at the Cold Springs Work Center. One of the other cabins may be occupied by Forest Service personnel. The area is easily accessed by vehicles, but a 4WD may be required in October, depending on weather conditions.

Campsites are located along the banks of the Colorado River, offering vistas of the river canyon, Fisher Towers and the area's captivating red rock formations. Individual sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Two group sites, Lower Onion Creek Group Sites A and B, are available for reservation through Recreation.gov.

This campground has two boat ramps and is near popular 4WD roads, rock climbing, hiking and rafting opportunities. (Do not enter the river without life jackets; it has dangerous under currents.).

Situated among mature cottonwood trees along the Gunnison River, this campground has 6 campsites, including one ADA accessible site with an adjacent accessible fishing pier. Site amenities include a boat ramp (non-motorized watercraft only), shade structures, picnic tables, fire rings and a vault toilet. Camping is free. Knowles Overlook Campground has 7 undeveloped sites that feature outstanding scenery of the Colorado River and the Black Ridge Canyon Wilderness. A high clearance vehicle is required to access this site and 4-wheel drive is recommended. Trailers and RV's are not advised due to the rough road. There is a pit toilet at this site. Please remove your garbage at the end of your visit. There is a 7 day camping limit.

Castle Rocks Campground features one site with two picnic tables and a pit toilet. This site is located in Rabbit Valley, within McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area. There is no fee associated with this site - please leave it better than how you found it. Camping is limited to 7 days.

Jouflas Campground is located in Rabbit Valley Motorized Area, which is within the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area. There are eight sites that feature picnic tables and fire grates. The campground also has a toilet facilities (non-flush). There is no fee to stay at this site. Please pack out all garbage.

The North Fruita Desert campground is a mountain biker’s paradise with campsites situated at the heart of miles of well-maintained trails. There are 35 campsites, each with a fire ring, picnic table and parking, but it is a more challenging environment. While there are four vault toilets within walking distance of each campsite, there is no water, electricity or garbage services available. Additionally, campers will need to bring their own firewood. The campground is open from March through November. There are 2 Group Sites.
