The city of Fairbanks is the most northerly metropolitan area in the United States, just 196 miles south of the Arctic Circle. Beyond the city limits lies a vast expanse of tundra and unforgiving mountains, which is what makes Fairbanks such a unique place to visit. It is a destination for the adventurous and those looking for a unique experience with their Fairbanks, AK RV rental.

There are few major settlements nearby, with just a few small towns dotting the Tanana River that flows through Fairbanks. The aptly named North Pole, Alaska is less than 15 miles away, and the post office there has the distinction of being the destination for thousands of children’s letters to Santa Claus each year.

Temperatures in Fairbanks (and everywhere in the Alaskan Interior) vary widely, with summers being a pleasant 80 degrees in the summer, but dropping to a possible -40 in the winter. Additionally, the hours of daylight can range from 21 hours to three. You’ll almost certainly want to visit in the Fairbanks RV rental during the summer months to take advantage of the prolonged daylight hours.

RV Parks Near Fairbanks

Given the vastness of the Alaskan Interior and the few roads running through it, you shouldn’t be surprised to find out that not too many RV enthusiasts make it this far north. Fortunately, when you book an RV in Fairbanks, you’ll have a great way to see the city, but even more importantly, you’ll have some options when it comes to accommodations near the wilderness.

Chena River Wayside and Rivers Edge RV Park and Campground are both options if you’re hoping to stay near to the downtown area, being just three and four miles away, respectively. The former is a state recreation area and host to 11 sites with electrical and water hookups, and the latter is a private campground with full hookups, and on-site showers and laundry facilities.

The Riverview RV Park is about eight miles to the east of Fairbanks, which has over 150 sites with full hookups along with laundry facilities and mini golf. It’s also conveniently located in the town of North Pole, just in case you wanted to have the opportunity to spend the day with Jolly Ol’ Saint Nick. Another option is Northern-Moosed RV Park and Campground, 11 miles north on the Elliot Highway. While it’s a little more remote than the other sites, you’ll love the peace and quiet that comes with it.

Exploring the City of Fairbanks

Fairbanks may seem cut off from the rest of the world, but that’s a big part of its charm. Residents are welcoming, always eager to see an unfamiliar face and show them all that their city has to offer. Summer is the best time to tour the friendly city with your Fairbanks motorhome rental, when you can catch the Midnight Sun Festival and the Tanana Valley State Fair.

Fairbanks has quite a few great museums to visit while touring the area in a Fairbanks camper rental. Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the University of Alaska’s Museum of the North. Classic car fans will love The Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum. If you haven’t brushed up on the area’s gold rush history, you’ll need to check out the Gold Daughters Alaska Museum.

Craft beer aficionados and fans of fine spirits will not be disappointed when visiting Fairbanks, as the city has multiple breweries and distilleries.

If you’re in need of some gifts to take home to friends and family, there are great Alaska-made goods and plenty of local books to be found around town at various local shops and bookstores.

Getting Outside near Fairbanks

Nature is all around you in Fairbanks and it doesn’t take more than a few minutes to get outside the city to enjoy it in its most pristine state. One of the closest places to do so is at Birch Hill Recreation Area, just five miles north of town. During the winter, it’s a small ski hill, but in the summer it’s a great place for a hike or a game of disc golf.

Chena River State Recreation area, about an hour east of the city, is one of the more popular spots for locals to get out of town with a number of hiking trails and a hot spring (bring your own towel).

If you’re driving your Fairbanks rental home to the Anchorage area, you’ll pass right by one of America’s most impressive wildernesses - Denali National Park. Unlike most parks, Denali doesn’t have much in the way of trails, and visitors are just allowed to explore the vast region however they choose on foot. There are a few campgrounds in the park, but only the Riley Creek Campground, near the entrance, is set up for RVs.

For a truly big adventure, take a bush plane from Fairbanks and get dropped off in the Gates of the Arctic National Park. It’s one of the least visited national parks in the United States, has no defined trails, and is almost completely inaccessible except by air. You’ll need some serious survival skills to go there, but for those that have them, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure opportunity.
