Big Bertha's Brother, Bubba, is a sleek RV that is easy to drive and easy to park and great for trips near and far. Pick up at the Harborview Marina in Baltimore and leave your vehicle there during your trip. Unlimited miles per day are included and discounts are applied for length of stay automatically - plug in your dates of travel to see them. Please keep her neat and tidy and no smoking. Pets are welcome and please understand that maintaining an RV requires patience and workarounds at times. See Big Bertha's Sister listing for references in the comparable listings below. Just like any siblings, they are very similar but have unique traits. This one is one year older, similar mileage but has the Bluetec engine and some extra driving features that make is slightly more expensive per day than Big Bertha's Sister. It is perfect for two adults but three is ok too if the third is a toddler or another adult who doesn't mind a sleeping mat on the floor, or can use the inflatable bed that goes across the front seats. We think Big Bertha's Brother got jealous and has joined in the fun. A Few Words of Caution: If you have the mindset of a finicky perfectionist, I would not recommend renting this RV or any RV for that matter. They require constant maintenance and a spirit of overcoming challenges with any one of the complex systems that are provided, RV power, fans, lights, refrigeration, propane, heating, cooling, and mechanical issues. I will help with every step of the way when something occurs. In some cases, we might not be able to address every single issue that might occur and it could be disappointing at times. We will make sure to go over anything that might be an issue during orientation.

What's included

Bring your own sleeping gear. The bed is closest to a queen size for your sheets or sleeping bags. Please also bring your own toiletries and cleaning supplies - we typically discard everything between rentals. We include cookware, utensils, coffee maker, plates and silverware or you can bring your own and take with you or discard at the end. There are two folding camp chairs and a broom. This is not the Ritz Carlton :)

Recommendations

Public parks across the nation are great places to stay. Hook up to any RV campsite and you've got a 1 Br Condo on wheels.

Other things to note

We don't charge for cleaning or dumping and we expect that each renter dumps and clean sweeps before returning by the honor system.

My dog Chuck and I love to go on weekend excursions in this RV when it is not rented out on Outdoorsy. We are also avid sailors from the Harborview Marina in Baltimore.

We are dog-friendly, laid back RV campers that just happened upon three similar Roadtrek SS Agile RVs based on our original Big Bertha. We wanted one as a backup and then Covid occurred and we decided on a third. This is not our main business. The more willingness to go with the flow and address things as they come up with troubleshooting, the better. We have a great Sprinter mechanic and we can fix just about everything or have a viable workaround for the RV functions. For example, the awning legs for these are no longer made so we have aftermarket legs that seem to work fine but have to be attached manually.

We had an amazing trip, but there's no getting around the fact that we had a major mechanical failure and cut the trip short. One star is just for Pat trying to be helpful. The vehicle needed major repairs. Before that it had been relatively comfortable with some issues. The gray and black tank are mixing and it caused some smell and fly problems even with limited use. Once the major mechanical issue started we had to divert hours to a dealership and couldn't keep using the vehicle for long. Outdoorsy has been unhelpful and the roadside assistance which cost 1500 after 3 hours waiting told us to go to a dealership. I doubt I would ever use them ok.

Patrick T’s answer

Unfortunately they were on a month-long rental in Kansas at the time and the DPF Flex pipe had a crack in it (Google it) and the sensors for the DEF tank were not working. This was not a major mechanical failure by any means but I am sure that it felt like that to them. The "mechanical" side of the vehicle was just fine, the engine, the wheels, tires, etc. What went wrong had to do with the emissions of diesel exhaust that must meet EPA standards. They drove it back to Baltimore just fine without issue and got a refund for unused days as well as an extra day for inconvenience and some more to cover some of the fees. For some reason, they did not want to use the workaround that I suggested of idling and explained to me that idling the van was not recommended by the dealer mechanic because the wires could melt. There were about 10 starts on the DEF monitor left and about that many days left in their trip. This idling was somehow dangerous but driving it was not. They said they smelled wires that they thought were wires. I feel bad for them and that we were not able to troubleshoot the gray and black tank issue. In most cases, it occurs when there is a clog in the black tank but was never at a point were we could diagnose and address it. I was available every step of the way and we are now getting the DPF flex pipe fixed before next renters.

We had an amazing time in this RV! Patrick was extremely kind and explained everything about the RV very clearly. It was perfect for our little family and dog to travel to the Midwest. We are hoping to book again in the future!

I've hesitated reviewing since our trip in May, but now that Outdoorsy helped facilitate a resolution with Patrick, I'll just make a simple mention. Bubba came complete with a very full blackwater tank from the previous renters. (Patrick only requests verbal confirmation that you emptied). Do not turn the key to start your rental until you have absolute guarantee that the tanks are empty that should be and that the tanks are full that should be. Our very first RV trip was quite stinky and although Patrick made some suggestions and offers, we were in a tough 'pandemic' place for our trip. Likely given his desire to keep all of his RV fleet in shape and in top business, he will have now resolved this. Thank you Outdoorsy for your help.

Patrick T’s answer

This was a very unfortunate rental. I do and have trusted that each renter dump and maintain the black and gray tanks. The renters prior to his trip were quick to point out how they would be camping with other very experienced RV owners and to not worry about dumping (so I didn't). Gary's trip was next and the one that has now got me to double check that the tanks are empty. It is important to be able to address any unfortunate circumstances or potential issues before or during your trip. Please ask any questions you have about dumping or more details about this rental. For example, one of my previous renters got stuck in 95 S traffic and returned the RV much later than expected with tanks unemptied. I contacted the next-day renters and they agreed to dump the tanks the first chance they had so they could get off to an early start. That worked well as I do not charge for dumping or cleaning. I prefer that folks are generally tolerant and leave the RV in pretty good shape for next renters but please identify any issues during orientation. We do the standard disinfectant wipe down of common services but not a deep clean or detailing that might be more expected from commercial rental business. It is just me and my dogs :-) Issues occur and there are many different systems to maintain so that expecting that everything is 100% tip top and working every step of the way might not be a good fit for some campers. Please read all the reviews. I think that Gary as a small business owner himself was looking for a more professional, business owner repsonse instead of the casual, person-to-person type of relationships I develop on this sharing site.
