After we got home from our camping trip we noticed the back-window popped open.
The bracket to the window had broken loose. The window is where the bunk beds are, which we did not use. It was just me and my wife, we slept in the larger bed. We didn’t open the windows in the camper because it was very hot and muggy the weekend we had it. When we took the camper back to Kyle, I immediately pointed the window out to him. If I was a dishonest person, I could have easily rigged the window shut, but I thought I was being helpful by showing him the issue. If you look at the pictures you can tell that the bracket is completely broken. I think it’s reasonable to say, that kind of damage would not be caused from just pulling the camper down the road. The bracket looks to have been damaged from being used often. Probably misused. The window is in the bunk bed area which is where I would imagine most kids would sleep. Most kids are probably not very gentle about opening windows. Kyle said he looks the camper over before renting it out which I don’t doubt. But I don’t think you can possibly check every bracket, screw, rivet, etc. on the camper every single time. I believe that he could have easily missed this bracket being repaired by someone who had previously rented and fixed it. So I think the bracket was broke before or was misused and was barely hanging on, and during my trip the fix did not hold. Look at the picture of the handle to the bracket. You have to pull the handle inward to shut the window. If you use to much force that would break the thin bracket.
Again, we never opened or closed any window in the camper. We never touched the handle to the window. Nothing we did would have caused it to break so I do not think it is fair that we should have to pay to fix something that was damaged by others.
I discussed this with Kyle and he told me that since it happened on my watch then it’s my responsibility. I told him that nothing I did would have caused the damage but he would not reason with me at all.
As he was showing me the camper he demonstrated how the canopy operates. As he was doing this it made a loud pop and part of the shock had broken.
Luckily it happen while he was showing me or I would have been paying for that as well.
So if you plan on renting from Kyle you should plan on using up a half of day looking over every bracket, screw, rivet etc. which will take several hours. And hope that something major like air conditioning doesn’t quit on you.
His argument is no matter what breaks it’s on you. He will not reason with you.
I was able to dispute this later with Outdoorsy, I believe they prefer to stay neutral and did not make him give the money back, but they did give me a $100 credit which I do appreciate.
Not sure that would have been the case if it was something that cost a lot more.
Not all renters are this way.
