Nestled in the historically-rich Gold Rush country of Central California, Angels Camp (or the “City of Angels”) is the only incorporated city in Calaveras County. It flourished in the mid-19th century when more than 4,000 miners flocked to the region, with the town still honeycombed with miles of mine tunnels. Its proximity to some of California’s most loved wilderness areas and charming historic center make it a popular destination to rent an RV and get away.

The Heritage-listed settlement was originally known as Carson’s Creek before being renamed after a shopkeeper, Henry Angel, in 1853. It’s famously associated with Mark Twain’s short story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”, which was said to be based on a tale he heard at the Angels Hotel in 1865. An annual frog jumping competition known as the Jumping Frog Jubilee takes place to honor this legacy, with Angels Camp sometimes nicknamed “Frogtown” as a result.

Stretch your legs on one of the hiking trails or cast a fishing line to see what’s biting, with boats, kayaks, and canoes available for rent at the on-site marina. Also nearby is the Natural Bridges Trail - a two-mile round-trip hike that leads through impressive limestone caverns which have been carved over thousands of years by the Coyote Creek.

Just to the east of Angels Camp lies the Stanislaus National Forest, which encompasses the glacial-carved landscapes of the Emigrant Wilderness whose volcanic peaks and ridges are interspersed with lakes and meadows. Hiking routes such as the long-distance Pacific Crest Trail traverse the reserve, which is also a hub for rafting and kayaking along the scenic Tuolumne River.

Pick up your RV rental in Angels Camp and spend a day in the spectacular Yosemite Valley, which is protected within one of the United States’ most iconic national parks. It’s home to majestic waterfalls, giant sequoias, and awe-inspiring cliffs, including the granite formations of Half Dome and El Capitan. It’s an understandably popular hub for rock climbers and trekkers, with numerous trails leading to Yosemite’s magnificent cascades like the Yosemite Falls.
