Atherton is a small affluent town in Northern California between the cities of San Jose and San Francisco. The town was first settled in 1866, back when it was still known as Fair Oaks. The name was later changed to honor Faxon Dean Atherton, a wealthy businessman who bought up much of the land in Atherton to build a massive estate.

Atherton is thickly wooded in a rural refuge away from the big cities of the San Francisco Bay Area and is home to many of Silicon Valley’s tech company CEOs. Lots of professional actors, musicians, and celebrities call Atherton home due to its lush scenery and privacy. In fact, Atherton is one of the most expensive zip codes in the entire country due to the sheer amount of wealth its citizens possess.

You can book an RV in Atherton and see for yourself why so many wealthy people choose to live there. The town overall is quite gorgeous, with easy access to metro areas and everything you could possibly need. Lots of state parks and stellar beaches are within a short distance and are easy to find in your Atherton camper rental.

Outdoors Adventures

Part of the allure of getting an Atherton motorhome rental for your trip is the prospect of visiting several parks, forests, and beaches without worrying about transportation or finding a hotel to stay at. In fact, the entire area between Atherton and the coast is packed with every kind of park, nature preserve, and recreation area imaginable. Portola Redwoods State Park is a fine place to start your Atherton RV rental road trip, where you can hike beneath the majestic mighty redwoods. These towering iconic giants are an attraction on their own and are among the largest trees on the planet. There are plenty of streams and creeks to fish or canoe, 18 miles of hiking trails, and several campgrounds to house you when you rent an RV and need a place to stay. Big Basin Redwoods State Park is also known for its groves of redwood trees and immense open space. The park is attached to the West Waddell Creek State Wilderness, together forming a sizable wilderness area rife with wildlife and lush scenery. If you are lucky, you will see some of the hidden waterfalls within the park, or find a spring to bathe in.

The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park is yet another fabulous state park close to Atherton, and one of the countless places to bring your Atherton camper rental for a visit. The park is found in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, where it protects and rehabilitates the ecosystem which was once appreciated for its valuable redwood lumber. Much of the forest was planted and restored thanks to the efforts of conservationists, and people enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding through it to get an in-depth look at its ethereal beauty. Guests are able to backpack camp in the forest, but sadly there are no campsites to accommodate your Atherton RV rental by owner.

Pinnacles National Park is one of the newer additions to the US national parks system, established in 2013. This lesser-known park is a hidden gem, overlooked in favor of more well-known national parks like Yosemite National Park and Death Valley National Park. The park is a mecca for rock climbers due to its geological features, epic caves, sheer rock faces, and rocky gorges. Climbers of all different abilities can try their hand at climbing in this stunning park while taking note of the many types of wild animals that roam around. You might want to stay a few extra nights in your Atherton camper rental when you visit this incredible park because there is simply too much to see and not enough time to do it in one trip.

RV Parks to Visit

There aren’t too many places to camp near Atherton, but savvy travelers can do a bit of research and find some suitable places to stay when they rent an RV. Trailer Villa RV Park is a place to stay nearby, with spacious sites and a location right off of the highway.
