A great destination for your next RV rental vacation can be found in Benicia, California. Home of the third location of the California state capitol building, prior to the legislature’s move to Sacramento in 1854, Benicia is located in the North Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area in Solano County. When you book an RV in Benicia, you can set up camp in the “best natural site for a commercial city” according to Lt. William Tecumseh Sherman, who was once posted at the historic Benicia Arsenal. Lt. Ulysses S. Grant replaced Sherman upon his retirement.

On the north shore of the Carquinez Strait, Benicia offers a variety of things to do and see while keeping you close to destinations like San Francisco or Napa, both of which make great locations for day trips. The city’s location has also played an important role in the ways that Benicia has developed over the years. Benicia was once a destination for Pony Express Riders who hoped to catch a ferry and cross over to Martinez, simply because they had missed their steamer in Sacramento. In the late 1870s, the city was established as an important port city, when large ferries began carrying trains from Benicia to Port Costa. By the mid-1880s, shipyards in Benicia became a central location for wheat storage and trade.

While there were times of decline for the small city, in the 1960s the Benicia Arsenal was shut down and the Benicia-Martinez Bridge was constructed. These developments allowed the city to grow as a suburb of Oakland and San Francisco. Today, with a population of just under 30,000 residents, there is no shortage of things to do when renting your RV in Benicia. From art galleries and restaurants to museums, parks, and more, there is certain to be something for everyone.

Another great day-trip destination when renting an RV in Benicia is Mount Diablo State Park. Exploring the City

Benicia is essentially divided into four main sections with historic First Street running down the middle. First Street is the primary area for tourists to enjoy historic, small-town charm, where shops and boutiques offer unique experiences, one-of-a-kind items and a variety of antiques. Dining options are numerous, too. Enjoy lunch at an outdoor café or taste local seafood from a booth overlooking the water. Looking for more to do? The City of Benicia hosts a variety of events including the Torchlight Parade, Picnic in the Park events, as well as Arts in the Park.

The East and West Sides, respective to First Street, feature many of the beautiful older homes of the city. The East Side is also where you can find the Benicia Arsenal, home to historical buildings including The Clock Tower and the Jefferson Street Mansion. The Southampton area has been developed primarily since 1970 and is mostly single-family homes and condominiums. If history, art, and antiques are what you are looking for, booking a motorhome rental in Benicia certainly will not disappoint.
