Northern California has long been a popular destination for travelers seeking to experience the vast landscapes of the western U.S.; when you book an RV in Grass Valley, CA, you’ll be in a position to explore this rugged, mountainous region.

Grass Valley was once called both Boston Ravine and Centerville back when the gold rush brought legions of settlers out west to find new ways to prosper. Grass Valley is also unique with regards to its cultural heritage; many of the first miners to arrive during the gold rush were from Cornwall in the United Kingdom, which is evident by the Cornish Christmas celebration the town holds each year during the holidays. Grass Valley also enjoys Cornish food during the Saint Piran’s Day festivities each year; Saint Piran is the patron saint of both Cornwall and tin miners.

Although it started as a mining haven and then became an agricultural hub, Grass Valley is now primarily known as a tourist destination with a rapidly growing wine industry that thrives in the region’s Mediterranean climate. Grass Valley still holds two of California's richest and largest mines, the North Star Mine and the Empire Mine, both of which have since become a memorial park commemorating the gold rush and the town’s rich history.

In the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, this charming town is within reach of many wonderful destinations like Sacramento and Reno, NV which are only about an hour’s drive away. Additionally, San Francisco is about 140 miles away, so many of the lovely cities, as well as national parks and forests, are easily accessed when you book an RV rental in Grass Valley.

Discover Grass Valley

Explore the Outdoors

You don’t need to know much about northern California to know that it is a place with abundant natural beauty. Grass Valley is an ideal place to rent an RV and begin your explanation for many reasons, most notably its proximity to the mountains and forests for which California is famous.

In town, Condon Park is a great place to start, with its miles of friendly, scenic hiking trails winding between the forest groves. This park is known for being incredibly dog-friendly and pooches are allowed to roam freely and mingle without worry. Check out the 18-hole disc golf course there, too.

Empire Mine State Historical Park is the site of two major mines that were donated to preserve the history of Grass Valley’s livelihood. Take a tour of the mines that produced over 5 million ounces of gold between 1856 and 1950.

Just a short drive out of town in your Grass Valley RV rental will bring you to the precipice of spectacular nature uninterrupted by development. A handful of national forests are close by with Plumas National Forest being the closest. With over a million acres of serene ponderosa pines, white fir, Douglas fir, and Jeffrey’s pine, a tenth of which is old growth ancient forest, Plumas National Forest hypnotizes visitors with its ethereal beauty.

South of Plumas you can find Tahoe, Humboldt-Toiyabe, and El Dorado National Forests, respectively. The remarkable waters of Lake Tahoe can be found in between the three of these forests and is considered the largest lake outside the Great Lakes, and the second deepest, too. Tahoe National Park has incredible mountain views of Mount Lassen and Mount Shasta, which are considered holy mountains to the indigenous peoples of California.

You should take the time to take your Grass Valley camper rental to Yosemite National Park to see one of the treasures of the United State’s amazing national park system. With majestic granite cliffs, stunning biodiversity, careening waterfalls, and ancient sequoia groves, it is no wonder why Yosemite is the most popular park in the entire country.
