When you think of RV travel, the metro area of Los Angeles may not the first destination that comes to mind. However, Southern California has a lot to offer when it comes to renting an RV: beautiful weather, tons of attractions, and a veritable playground of outdoor recreation with the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Mountains both within close proximity. In that sprawling metropolis is the city of Hawthorne, a relatively quiet community that’s home to a number of innovative tech companies including SpaceX, The Boring Company, and Northrop Grumman. It’s also about 15 miles to the southwest of LA, and just south of the suburb of Inglewood.
When you book an RV in Hawthorne you may want to consider taking public transportation to get between the surrounding cities. Parking for the Hawthorne RV rental will be quite a challenge to locate in some of the more densely populated sections of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
When exploring the area with a motorhome rental in Hawthorne, set aside at least a few days for enjoying the beach. The city is only a few miles from the coast and that means beach access is never far away. El Segundo Beach is the closest, but it’s worth going the extra couple miles to Manhattan Beach, one of the area’s most famous. Just a few blocks from Manhattan Beach is Sand Dune Park, a giant sand dune right in the middle of town. It’s a huge sandbox, a tough workout, and an odd sight to see.
If a walk in the park is more of what you’re looking for, go for a stroll on the Hermosa Valley Greenway and it’ll no longer feel like you’re right in the middle of one of the world’s biggest metropolises. It runs for 3.5 miles through the towns of Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach. Less than ten miles from Hawthorne, Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area is another place to escape the crowds and pollution of the city. Some even call it “L.A.’s Central Park”.
There are a few places around the area to set up camp with an RV rental near Hawthorne. Dockweiller RV Park is a few miles to the west and has a beachfront location. Golden Shore RV Resort, in the city of Long Beach, is about twenty miles to the south, where the Los Angeles River empties into Queensway Bay. The park is host to several amenities including a pool, full hookups, laundry facilities, and a great picnic area on the bay. The famously historic Queen Mary ocean liner is also moored in the bay and is visible from the park.
To fuel up your Hawthorne motorhome rental, you might want to stop at one of the travel centers or truck stops found near Long Beach, which tend to have much larger bays next to each pump, making it easier to maneuver.
One of the best things about Hawthorne is its location, centered between the city of Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean. Even considering excessive traffic, you probably won’t be more than an hour’s drive from all of the great sights the area has to offer when you rent an RV here.
You might have forgotten, but the Beach Boys originally consisted of four members, three of whom were brothers. Their family home was located right in Hawthorne and now it’s a monument to the band. Unfortunately, their home was destroyed during the building of the Centennial Freeway, so all that’s left is a small plaque dedicated to the kings of surf rock. On the topic of music though, famed The Forum arena is just a few miles away in Inglewood and is host to dozens of big names acts every year. It was also the premier sporting events center in LA with both the Lakers and Kings playing there until moving to the Staples Center in the late ‘90s.
Near Hawthorne in Los Angeles proper is one of the city’s quirkiest museums, the Diorama-Museum of Bhagavad-gita. Combining Indian doll making and yogic wisdom with multimedia technology, this won’t be your college experience with the Hindu scripture.
In nearby El Segundo, you’ll find a museum dedicated to cars, displaying old preserved cars and explaining the cultural evolution of the automobile. If you visit on a Sunday, you can even take a ride in a historic vehicle. Also in El Segundo is a distillery which makes a range of spirits, offers tours, and houses a 1920’s-themed speakeasy taproom serving both spirits and locally-brewed beer.
