Helendale is an unincorporated member of San Bernardino County, in the state of California. It was originally named Point of Rocks and was a popular stopover for travelers heading through the mountains to the coast. Kit Carson, a famous historical figure in the Early West, was said to have stopped here. The Santa Fe Railroad built a station here in the 1880s in order for trains to refill their water supply before heading out across the High Desert. In 1897, the town's name was changed to Helen, in honor of railroad executive Arthur G. Wells' daughter, Helen A. Wells. It was finally and permanently changed to Helendale in 1918. Helendale was also one of many communities on and associated with Route 66.

Search for an RV in San Bernardino County and you'll have an extensive selection of RVs to rent. While you're behind the wheel, consider checking out some of these other interesting nearby places. Rosamond originally based its economy on ranching, farming, and gold exploration. Daggett has been called “The Tiny Town That Changed Perceptions of the Mojave Desert”, after a quote from John Steinbeck's novel “The Grapes of Wrath” (“there's just stuff people do”). Yucca Valley is home to the Joshua Tree National Park Art Festival, held annually. Big Bear Lake is the premier mountain lake destination for Southern California. Phelan maintains its rural lifestyle by mandating parcels of land must be a minimum of 2.5 acres; exceptions to this bylaw must be applied for and approved by the city. A Helendale camper rental is how you will visit these places and others.

The Great Outdoors

Mojave National Preserve is an area populated by Joshua trees, “singing” sand dunes (a reference to the sound made by the wind blowing past the dunes), volcanic cinder cones, and large patches of wildflowers. It is home to a wide variety of amphibians and reptiles, mammals, and birds. Nature viewers will see a variety of frogs, mammals such as jackrabbits, coyotes and bats, and many more. The preserve is open for activities such as backpacking and hiking and offers courses in nature interpretation and outdoor survival, to name a few.

Rodman Mountains Wilderness Area is divided into two sections, from southeast to northwest, by a large lava flow that formed a long mesa many years ago. It is a combination of mountain and desert, with inspiring bajadas, photogenic escarpments, and canyon mazes; the mountains are home to golden eagles, prairie falcons, and other raptors. The raptors breed on the mountain, one of seven areas in the California desert that act as a breeding ground. Be sure to bring your camera to capture these magnificent creatures; your Helendale RV trailer rental is a good blind to capture these images from, should the opportunity avail itself.

Grass Valley Wilderness is a creosote bush scrub community located on a series of scattered hills and the desert valley floor. The hills are reddish brown to yellow in color, rising 200 to 600 feet in height. Joshua trees appear occasionally, as raptors, desert tortoises, and Mojave ground squirrels wander through. The wilderness is a controlled recreational area, where guests may hike and mountain bike, go horseback riding, and more.

Shady Lane RV Camp has restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, and Wi-Fi. The individual sites have gravel pads, full hookups, and pull-through access. Pets are allowed and some of the residents are long term.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to see and do in and near Helendale. Start with a theme park for the kids (or the kid inside you), situated right next to a lake, where the screams from circus rides mingle with the screams of water worshippers. Then move onto the game rooms, where jumping is taken to new heights; when your voice is completely gone, there are several museums dedicated to the history of their areas. One family park combines the best of everything: water activities, go-karts, batting cages and more.

Now that the day is done, it is time to rejoice with food. There are a number of restaurants to be found in Helensdale, most of them locally owned and operated, and you know what that means. Fresh food and lots of it. One local cafe has a very popular breakfast and lunch menu; try the Hobo Skillet at this iconic Route 66 venue. A Japanese restaurant serves sushi and other classic Japanese items and the quality of the food is, in a single word, authentic. If you make it here, try “The Bomb Roll”. Call ahead and you can also order take out for enjoying under the canopy of your Helendale motorhome rental, under a quiet desert sky.

Your Helendale luxury RV rental is also the center of your chef aspirations and there is nothing wrong with wanting to prepare your own meal in your home-on-wheels. Nobody knows your taste preferences better than you and your loved ones, and a quiet meal enjoyed under the stars is what vacation memories are made of.
