North of San Francisco in California, there are lots of peaceful little villages along the coast. Inverness is a small unincorporated community nestled between a large wilderness area and the Tomales Bay. Inverness was named for Inverness in Scotland, a city with soft rolling hills of green that slip into the sea much like the area around Inverness, California.

Inverness was once a camping destination enjoyed by people from Oakland and San Francisco, and despite its extraordinary scenery and charm, has largely kept its small-town vibe undisturbed by the outside world. Aside from a few restaurants, cafes, and shops on the main drag, there is little to this simple sleepy town other than its beaches and its small tourism industry. Inverness offers the advantage of being close by to several major cities, yet far away enough to maintain its own independence and relaxing atmosphere. When you book an RV in Inverness, you just might want to pack up and move there due to its laid-back nature.

Outdoors Adventures

If there is one thing that California is known for, it's the epic scenery and natural beauty of the state. Whether you rent an RV and explore the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the east or the national parks of central and southern California, you will be captivated by the great outdoors of the Golden State. The coastal regions of the northern region of California are no exception to this rule, with dozens of state and national parks and recreation areas found up and down the seaboard. Tomales Bay State Park is an appropriate place to start your trip with an Inverness motorhome rental because it borders the town to the north. The park straddles both sides of the Tomales Bay from which it gets its name and contains several swimming areas and peaceful beaches. The land was once occupied by the coastal Miwok people, and there is an interpretive program at the park that explains the history of the native people that once called the peninsula home.

Samuel P. Taylor State Park is another fabulous place you can bring your Inverness RV rental when you decide to head away from town and south towards the big city. The park has rolling grasslands and magical redwood forests that you can hike through while you admire the sheer size of the massive trees. Several hundred acres of the park’s redwood forest is virgin, old-growth forest with trees dating back thousands of years. Mount Tamalpais State Park and the adjoining Muir Woods National Monument together form a magnificent wilderness area that you can visit with your Inverness camper rental and explore. Mount Tamalpais can be summited by means of a challenging hike and offers fantastic views of the coast and San Francisco. The Cushing Memorial Amphitheater, a natural stone amphitheater with thousands of seats, is one of the coolest features of the park, with frequent performances, concerts, and lectures about nature and astronomy.

It would be absurd to forget Point Reyes National Seashore, a park largely responsible for the town of Invernesses’ tourism industry. This incredible seashore attracts two and a half million people each year, with over 70,000 acres of pristine coastline and lush forest. There are hidden lagoons you can swim in, glorious waterfalls to hike to, and impressive views from high atop the towering bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There are several campgrounds at the seashore park but only a few can accommodate your Inverness RV trailer rental.

RV Parks to Visit

It can be quite tricky to find an RV park or campground when you rent an RV in Inverness, as most of the local campgrounds are for tent camping only. Olena Campground can be found on the edge of Point Reyes National Seashore with large spacious campsites for you to park and stay. There are playgrounds, a clubhouse, a post office, some shared kitchens, and even basketball and volleyball courts to use during your stay.

Samuel P. Taylor State Park and many of the other local state and county parks have campgrounds too, although they won’t have the same amenities you might find at upscale RV resorts. Novato RV Park could be a good option for those that want more city life throughout their vacations and is only a few minutes’ walk from the Golden Gate Bridge, a monumental landmark attraction worth visiting in its own right.

City Sightseeing

Inverness is a place of great natural beauty but there are not too many things to do in the small town aside from eating and drinking. The nearby city of Petaluma is quite a bit larger and therefore more likely to fulfill your need to see attractions and get a taste of the city life when you rent an RV in Inverness. The nearby outlet mall is a popular shopping destination frequented by people from as far as San Francisco and Oakland for its bargains. The outdoor mall has a great walking path with benches.

Jack London State Historic Park is a two-for-one special as it holds over 1,000 acres of splendid forest and lots of historical buildings including the cabin where the writer Jack London lived.

The Petaluma Historical Library and Museum is housed in an old Carnegie library, with iconic Greek architecture and massive columns on the front facade. The history museum is rich with information about many different topics, with a wide range of exhibits about settlers, agriculture, and the Miwok indigenous people.
