The Golden State has experienced several population booms over the years. One of them came with the 1849 gold rush. The Central Valley had a growth spurt of its own, albeit a much later one. As late as the 1970s, Manteca and other nearby towns were quiet farming hamlets. Less than a generation later, they were home to thousands of San Francisco-area commuters. This surge of growth makes now a great time to experience “the Family City” and nearby communities. Much of the quiet agrarian atmosphere remains, yet Manteca has one of the strongest heartbeats in San Joaquin County. At the rate these towns are growing, that balance may not last much longer, so book an RV in Manteca today.

Discover Manteca

Experience the Sites and Scenery

The Caswell Memorial State Park is just outside of town near Ripon. It’s home to a number of rare species, such as riparian oak trees and brush rabbits. In fact, according to some scientists, these furry little creatures may not exist anywhere else in the world. Other rare sights include red-tailed and red-shouldered hawks. Plan on staying up late or getting up early to see these creatures in flight. The Stanislaus River, which first attracted fur traders in the early 1800s, is the park’s centerpiece. Other attractions include dozens of hiking trails as well as a beach and swimming area. As a bonus, there are lots of secluded campsites that are not much more than a stone’s throw away from grocery stores and other similar venues. Such is life in Manteca.

In nearby Vernalis, you’ll find the one-of-a-kind San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge. Download the smartphone app to navigate places like the Pelican Nature Trail and Viewing Area. See lots of rare wildlife the whole year round. There’s also the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which is one of the largest wetlands areas in the San Joaquin Valley. The numerous trails allow leashed dogs. These well-marked trails get a little warm in the summer, so bring plenty of water.

A group of Cambodian refugees founded the Wat Dhammararam Buddhist Temple shortly after they came to California. Today, one of the largest temples in the Golden State is a very quiet and serene place. The temple area is dominated by a number of huge statues that give excellent insight into the Cambodian/Thai culture. It’s a particularly nice place to visit on Khmer New Year and other holidays.

Don’t miss the nearby Mossdale Crossing Railroad Bridge in Lathrop. In 1869, this bridge was the final link in the first transcontinental railroad. Locals will quickly point out that although railroad bigwigs hammered in the Golden Spike in May, the line was not coast-to-coast until this bridge was completed. The first train puffed across in September, and the bridge remains in use today.

City Attractions

People may prefer to celebrate Manteca’s history in different ways. For these individuals, the Lucca Winery is worth a stop with the Manteca motorhome rental. In the 1950s, Guido Lucchesi began making a few bottles of homemade wine with different kinds of zinfandel grapes from the family farm. In 1990, his son significantly expanded the venture. Today, it covers over 400 acres. The family says that the vines must grow deeper to find water in the area’s sandy soil, and that gives Lucca wines a richer flavor. We just know that it makes for an excellent glass of wine. Like many other places you can take your Manteca rental RV in the area, Tesoro Park is practically brand new. It’s not the biggest park in the world, but it is extremely green and extremely well-kept. With its two big playgrounds and numerous barbecue grills, Tesoro Park is a great place for families to spend a warm afternoon.

What’s Unique

The blend of really old and really new makes Manteca one of the most unique destinations in central California. In many other fast-growing communities, there is tension between longtime residents and new arrivals. But there’s very little such friction in the San Joaquin Valley. There are just lots and lots of families who try the best they can to do the most good that they can. And that’s a very nice place to visit or permanently set down roots. Either way, a camper rental in Manteca may be the best way to experience this friendly city.

Where to Park It

A growing population means lots of very good RV parks. Two Rivers RV Park is a good example. The camp is located at the junction of the San Joaquin and Stanislaus Rivers, so there is wildlife aplenty. There’s also lots of very good fishing, which is probably why a Bass Pro Shop is close at hand. Be advised that Two Rivers is more of a camping site than an RV park.

For a slightly more urban experience that’s also very close to nature, try the Turtle Beach RV Resort. The San Joaquin River surrounds the camp on three sides. So, there are plenty of fishing opportunities. There’s also a boat launch. Other amenities include cable TV and a large clubhouse.

The nearby French Camp RV Park in Stockton offers a similar experience for your Manteca rental RV excursion. Every one of the 196 spots has at least a 30 AMP hookup, in addition to full picnic facilities. Other amenities include two playgrounds, a huge laundry facility, daily propane tank top-offs, and an on-site general store.

The Food

Not surprisingly, fresh fish is a staple in Manteca. The variety of wildlife throughout the region also means variety on your dinner plate. For some authentic fish tacos, try the Taqueria Manteca or the Taqueria La Estrella. There are plenty of comfort food places as well, like the venerable Johnny’s Restaurant on Yosemite. For something a little different, try Billie Hills Hillbillie BBQ. Cute name, huh? Of course, doing your own cooking is one of the benefits of having a Manteca RV rental. There are plenty of corner markets where you can pick up something fresh for dinner.

Traveling by camper rental in Manteca, CA is one of the best ways to explore this little slice of the Golden State, so start your RV adventure today.
