At the center of Napa County in northern California, is the city of Napa itself. This elegant city is often associated with California’s illustrious wine country, an area known throughout the world as one of the best producers of grapes and wine.

In the 19th century, settlers began to encroach on what was formerly indigenous land. Settlers arrived in masses to California to grow crops in the rich soil. During the great gold and silver rushes of the mid-19th century, legions of people flocked to the west coast in search of riches, many of whom settled in Napa. After achieving statehood, the first wineries and vineyards started popping up, and to staff these large plantations, Napa relied on foreign migrant labor, mostly from southern Italy. As a result, Napa became a diverse city with numerous groups and cultural backgrounds.

When you book an RV in Napa, it’ll quickly become apparent why so many people have heard of and hope to one day see the fabled vineyards of California’s wine country. Although it took a massive dip in tourism in the early 21st century, the area has largely rebounded, welcoming millions of visitors each year. With its ideal location between San Francisco and Sacramento, there is no telling where you can go when you nab an RV rental near Napa, CA.

Discover Napa

Outdoors Adventures

Wine country sounds exciting and all, but there is plenty more to see and do, too, so take the Napa camper rental for a spin around northern California and explore. Some of the country’s most beautiful forests, lakes, and mountain ranges happen to be in the Golden State, and all of it can be seen with a little bit of patience and some gasoline.

To the south of Napa, towards the Bay Area, San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge awaits those hoping to see some amazing wildlife. Millions of migratory birds call the mudflats, wetlands, estuaries, and tidal marshes at San Pablo Bay their home. Point Reyes National Seashore is a great place to take the Napa RV rental if the white sandy beaches of California’s coast appeal to you. Miles and miles of hiking trails weave and wind around canyon corners and up mountainsides to the hidden, undeveloped beaches. There are a few breathtaking waterfalls near the beach that can be seen from the water. Lake Berryessa is the largest body of water in Napa County, where jet skiing, boating, swimming, fishing, tubing, and many other fun activities are popular.

Mendocino National Forest is north of Napa by a few hours’ drive, with almost one million acres of pristine scenery and untamed wilderness. The Sanhedrin Mountains overlook miles and miles of old-growth forests consisting of douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, white fir, and madrone trees dating back centuries.

On the other side of Sacramento in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, several national parks and forests await when you rent an RV in Napa. El Dorado National Forest has an extensive network of trails for cycling or hiking, and several wilderness areas including the Desolation Wilderness, an epic backpacking destination with majestic waterfalls and surreal panoramic views.

Lake Tahoe is also partially located inside of El Dorado National Forest, and is one of the largest lakes in the country. Stanislaus National Forest is directly south of El Dorado, with 900,000 acres of wilderness. Bear Valley and Dodge Ridge Ski Resorts operate within the confines of Stanislaus each winter. If you don't mind a bit of a road trip, you can take your Napa motorhome rental to Yosemite National Park to rock climb, backpack, and camp in one of the most famous parks in the world.

City Sightseeing

It is quite obvious that most people book trips to the city of Napa and its surrounding area to experience one of the world’s premier wine destinations. Oenophiles travel from across the planet to taste the delicious fermented nectars, while touring the very vineyards the grapes are grown in with great care. There are numerous wineries in town that let connoisseurs and amateurs attend wine tastings. The Riverbend Plaza is the center point of Napa, with countless restaurants, breweries, wineries, and boutiques for retail shopping. The Riverfront Promenade is another magnificent place to eat, drink, and shop, while taking a stroll along the Napa River, which flows through town. The Grape Crusher Statue is worth seeing, as it is the town’s closest thing to a true landmark. The statue depicts a person making wine, paying homage to the city’s history as a wine mecca.

The Napa Valley Opera House and the Uptown Theatre Napa are two cultural buildings doubling as historic sites, where operas, musicals, and concerts can still be seen. The opera house was built in 1879, making it a true architectural delight to see. Check out the Hess Collection Winery & Art Museum, which serves wine while guests can gaze upon the various pieces of art housed in the private collection.

RV Parks to Visit

Not only are there plenty of options when it comes to parking your Napa RV rental for the night, but the parks and campgrounds in the area embrace the wine tourism and cater to this specific niche.

Vineyard RV Park is named correctly as it is close to many of the area’s vineyards. The pool, volleyball courts, laundry facilities, clubhouse, and fitness facilities make for a decent place to stay. Napa Valley Expo RV Park is 10 city blocks from downtown Napa so you can walk around with ease, while saving your Napa motorhome rental for the big trips. San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA lies halfway between the Bay Area and Napa, so you don’t have to choose between the two.
