Pleasant Hill is a small city in Contra Costa County, in the East Bay area of San Francisco. Prior to 1920, Pleasant Hill was farmland which was then subdivided for housing. There is a statue, Soldiers Memorial Monument, dedicated to the soldiers who fought in World War I; it was originally located at Monument Boulevard (named after the statue) but was later moved to another location.

Pleasant Hill remained largely undeveloped until after World War II; a post office was built in 1948 and it was incorporated in 1961. The city is widely recognized for its architecture. There was no “downtown” until July 2000, when the Downtown Pleasant Hill shopping center opened. This outdoor mall, privately owned and operated, resembles a typical Main Street and was deliberately designed this way.

Pleasant Hill's former iconic structure was the dome-shaped CinéArts Theater. It was more popularly known as “the Dome”. Its final screening was “2001: A Space Odyssey” and it was torn down shortly after to make way for commercial construction, despite public opposition. Pleasant Hill's City Hall, constructed in the late 20th century, has won a number of architectural awards.

Book an RV in Pleasant Hill and you are one step closer to a vacation filled with adventure, historical intrigue and perhaps even celebrity elbow-rubbing (actor Tom Hanks grew up in Pleasant Hill). Other cities worth visiting are Concord, Fairfield, Vallejo, Oakland, and Richmond. Renting a motorhome in Pleasant Hill opens up more than your target destination; the world is literally at your feet.

Discover Pleasant Hill

The Great Outdoors

East of Pleasant Hill, Mount Diablo (Devil's Mountain) is a nice place to hike and enjoy the scenery. Visitors can hike to the top, take a mountain bike tour or drive to the top and hike the summit; taking your Pleasant Hill luxury RV rental to the top is not advisable, as the road is winding. On a clear day the view is spectacular but you should check the weather forecast as the clouds can shut out the view if they roll in. There are restrooms and a visitors center here. Farther down the mountain, hikers can park at the Junction Ranger Station and hike the Summit Trail, or park along North Gate Road to hike Angel Kerley Road (which is smaller and possibly too rough for driving). Park your Pleasant Hill RV rental here and enjoy the outdoors, knowing that comfort awaits you when you are finished.

RV Parks

There are very few RV parks in the San Francisco Bay area and not many in Pleasant Hill, but there are some within a reasonable distance of the city where you can set up camp with the Pleasant Hill motorhome rental.

Rio Viento RV Park is just about 25 miles northeast of Pleasant Hill, located on the Sacramento River. Getting there requires crossing a toll bridge and winding your way down a long, narrow and bumpy levee road. It has sites with full hookup (water, sewer, and electricity) and concrete pads, restrooms, a pet area, and palm trees. It is windy here but the wind helps to alleviate the summer heat.

Anthony Chabot Regional Park is slightly less than 15 miles southwest near Oakland and has sites which are paved and have full hookups (water, sewer, and electricity). The park has restrooms and showers, a playground and recreational hiking trails. Guests can go fishing in Lake Chabot. Visitors who plan to stay here should know that the campground is at the end of a long and winding road, so larger RVs might have some difficulty. Gates to the campground are closed and locked each night.

Exploring The City

There are at least two museums in Pleasant Hill, one historical and the other dedicated to local vegetation. There are also two gardens where visitors can view and learn about different species of plant life. One garden is small in size and takes about a half hour to view at a normal walking pace. There are plants for sale here, grab one for your Pleasant Hill travel trailer rental to make your home on wheels even more pleasant. The other garden, located in nearby Walnut Creek, has ponds and a variety of birds for viewing or photographing.

There is no better way to finish a day of hiking and exploring than with a good meal, and Pleasant Hill has its fair share of quality food outlets. Prices range from budget diners to moderately priced and fine dining venues. There are an abundance of locally owned restaurants to choose from, which could make deciding difficult. Start early before you're too hungry and you can make a walking tour of what's available your last hike of the day. The cuisines on hand include but aren't limited to Chinese, sushi, pizza, Italian, Mexican, American, and seafood. This is the Bay area, which means that at least one seafood dinner should be included in your trip. Enjoy!
