Like many communities in California, American Indians first settled in what would become SLO thousands of years ago. The first Europeans arrived in the late 1700s. Since San Luis Obispo was almost exactly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, it was an important outpost in Alta California. When the Spanish mission era ended, the area became a Mexican rancho. Today, thousands of visitors come to SLO to view the sweeping scenery and soak up the mild Mediterranean climate. The best way to experience these things, as well as everything else the area has to offer, is to book an RV in San Luis Obispo.

Discover San Luis Obispo

Experience the Sites and Scenery

At 1,500-plus feet high, Bishop Peak is one of the highest points in the area. It’s the tallest mountain in the Morros/Santa Lucia mountain range. Some twenty-five million years ago, magma welled up from the earth’s core to form the dacite mountain. So, Bishop Peak has some unique geological features. In years past, its granite has provided stones for many area buildings. Today, the thin, volcanic soil supports a number of vegetation and wildlife species not found elsewhere. You may also prefer to take your San Luis Obispo rental RV to one of several hiking trails. The Patricia Drive Trailhead offers a gradual, 4.2-mile jaunt from ground level to the summit. Or, you may prefer the “Oh, Man” trail. We’ll let you figure out the reason for this nickname on your own.

Nearby Cerro San Luis Obispo is geologically similar, but the sides are much steeper. So, it’s a popular spot for energetic joggers, hikers, and mountain bikers. The lemon and orange groves, which a Civil War veteran planted around the turn of the 20th century, make what the locals call San Luis Mountain even more unique. After you explore the mountain, for a nice change of pace, swap out your San Luis Obispo RV rental for a night at the Madonna Inn, which is at the base of the mountain.

Since it’s open twenty-four hours a day, the South Hills Open Space is a wonderful place to take your San Luis Obispo motorhome rental. This area is a true open space with few clearly-marked trails. Instead, visitors can find their own spot to enjoy views of SLO, overhead passing airplanes, the changing seasons, or a sunset. While there, visitors can catch glimpses of native plants and wildlife in this unspoiled little corner of a charming Northern California town.

City Attractions

The world’s first motel is no longer in business. But the Motel Inn is still a site worth seeing. When it opened as the Milestone Mo-Tel in 1925, guests paid $1.25 per night per room. Brothers Arthur and Alfred Heineman thought that SLO would be the ideal spot, as San Francisco and Los Angeles were two days apart by car at the time. Growth and entrepreneurship like this wouldn’t have been possible without the railroad, and the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum celebrates that part of the area’s history. The museum is inside a fully-restored 1890s-era freight house. It’s open every Saturday for visitors to enjoy artifacts and pictures. The Museum also hosts special events every October and May. While you’re in the area, take a break from your camper rental in San Luis Obispo to stay at the Madonna Inn. The 1,000-acre facility includes not only rooms but also a bakery, fashion boutique, gourmet gift shop, and more. Each of the aforementioned rooms is unique, with designs like rock fireplaces, European fixtures, rock rooms, waterfall showers, and fine furnishings.

What’s Unique

There is a big, big difference between Northern and Southern California. You can see it in the places you go and feel it in the people you meet. SLO combines the best parts of both. There aren’t many other spots in California that offer an experience like that.

Where to Park It

The Port San Luis RV Campground is in nearby Avila Beach. It’s not big on amenities, which is why stays are limited to fourteen days. However, this popular park is really big on stunning ocean views, which is why reservations are not accepted. There are simply too many people who enjoy this place to park their San Luis Obispo rental RVs. And, you could be one of them. For a longer-term stay, check out the Pismo Coast Village RV Resort in Pismo Beach. It has 400 hook-up sites. Amenities include a heated swimming pool, miniature golf course, restaurant, and store. It’s located almost literally right on the beach, and within easy walking distance of downtown Pismo Beach.

The Food

This part of California offers a great mixture of seafood and Mexican food. So naturally, we recommend the fish tacos at the Splash Cafe on Monterey Street, the nearby Taqueria Santa Cruz Express, or any of about a dozen other places in town. Fresh fruit is rather abundant in this neck of the woods as well.

With all that’s waiting for you in SLO, there’s no reason to delay. The weather’s always nice and visitors are always welcome. So, search for an RV in San Luis Obispo today.
