Santa Clarita is close enough to Los Angeles that you can easily make a day trip there, but far enough away you won’t feel like you’re staying in the big city. The city of Santa Clarita and the surrounding valley operate their own public transportation system but have connections to the Los Angeles bus system too. A much quicker alternative in LA, though, is to take the Metrolink Commuter Rail, which will have you downtown in about an hour.
RV Parks in Santa Clarita
Renting an RV in Santa Clarita, California is a pretty painless experience. There are not that many RV parks in the area, but the ones that are there provide excellent service. Valencia Travel Village has two heated pools and a spa and is just a couple of miles to the northwest of the downtown area. Castaic Lake RV Park is about ten miles to the north, and right off of I-5. It’s conveniently located close to a Pilot Travel Center which offers fuel and dump facilities. Rivers End RV Park is about 14 miles east of town on the banks of the Santa Clara River. It’s primarily a monthly rental park, but if you’re interested in staying in the area for awhile and appreciate the peace and quiet of a mountain setting, you might really like Rivers End.
If you’d like to stay close to Los Angeles, Walnut Ridge RV Park in Northridge is actually in the middle of an urban area. The Walnut Grove Shopping Center, along with a Costco is just steps away and public transportation is easily accessible.
Santa Clarita has three Walmarts, located on the northern, southern, and eastern edges of town, which is very convenient for picking up supplies, no matter which park you’re staying at.
Exploring the City of Santa Clarita
If you’re a shopaholic, you’ll surely need to take a trip to Westfield Valencia Town Center. The outdoor shopping mall features stores like Banana Republic, Swarovski, Williams-Sonoma, and Micheal Kors along with an impressive food selection with the likes of Bonefish Grill, Cheesecake Factory, and Johnny Rockets.
Santa Clarita also has not one, but two Six Flags Theme Parks: Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor. The former has 19 roller coasters, the world record for a single park, including the Colossus wooden coaster. It also has a flume ride, a rifting rafting ride, and a massive carousel. Hurricane Harbor is a dedicated waterpark with a wave pool, lazy river ride, and plenty of waterslides.
If you or anyone in your family is an animal lover, you’ll definitely want to visit the Gibbon Conservation Center, a few miles to the northeast of town. It’s home to the largest gibbon population in North America and is one of the best places to see these fascinating primates; tours are given on Saturday and Sunday morning.
For the beer connoisseur, there are fantastic breweries on hand that serve some excellent suds and are great examples of how California is leading the way in America’s craft brewing revolution. If you’re more of a wine fan, you’ll find a winery smack dab in the middle of the downtown area that offers regular tastings.
Things to Do Outside Near Santa Clarita
One of the most popular parks in the Santa Clarita area is probably Castaic Lake State Park. Anglers will be pleased to know that the V-shaped reservoir is stocked with bass, catfish, and trout and boat rentals are available. During the summer, swimming is permitted and lifeguards will be on duty.
Another popular place to spend some time outdoors is Santa Clarita Woodlands Park, just a couple miles to the southwest of town. The park and surrounding area are crisscrossed by several canyons, making it a popular day hiking destination.
17 miles to the northeast of Santa Clarita are the Vasquez Rocks. The striking formations are a result of uplift from the nearby San Andreas Fault and have been a popular place for shooting movies like The Flintstones, Blazing Saddles, and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.
Three hours north of Santa Clarita is Sequoia National Park, home to some of the largest trees in North America. The forests have a nearly endless number of great hiking trails and plenty of sites with hookups for parking your RV rental from Santa Clarita. To avoid the crowds during the summer, consider visiting the adjacent Kings Canyon National Park, which sees far fewer visitors. It’s equal in beauty, just with fewer services and camping facilities.
