The small suburban town of Sierra Madre sits at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains and on the eastern edge of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. It’s a pleasant jumping off point for exploring this part of Southern California; especially if you’re not a fan of crowds – though you still have to endure the traffic the area is so famous for.

Sierra Madre was given the distinction of “All-American City” in 2007 by the National Civic League in recognition of its strong connections between residents, businesses, and government. You can count on this being a friendly place to rent an RV, where you can get a real sense of the community in just a short period of time, while also having the opportunity to explore the surrounding area and all the attractions that it has to offer. Book an RV in Sierra Madre and start your adventure today.

Discover Sierra Madre

The Great Outdoors

Getting out and enjoying nature is easy in Sierra Madre with the San Gabriel Mountains almost within walking distance. One of the best places to take your Sierra Madre RV rental is Bailey Canyon Wilderness. It’s actually a small city park centered on the namesake canyon, but there’s enough trail there to entertain hikers for the day and if you climb up to nearby Jones Peak there are some excellent views of the town.

Another option close by is the Mount Wilson trail, which meanders towards the summit from a residential area on the town’s north side. Hiking to the top is fairly strenuous, taking most hikers the whole day, so only pursue this peak if you’re in good shape and have brought plenty of water.

For a day trip, consider driving out to Joshua Tree National Park. Getting there is easy, with most of the way being an interstate highway. There’s plenty to do there with dozens of hiking trails crisscrossing the alien-looking scenery. It’s also one of the best places to learn about desert ecology and how plants and animals find a way to live in this otherwise inhospitable landscape.

RV Parks near Sierra Madre

One of the closest parks for camping with your Sierra Madre motorhome rental is in San Dimas at the East Shore RV Park. This campground sits on the shores of beautiful Puddingstone Lake and has full hookups, laundry facilities, and a swimming pool if splashing around in the lake isn’t your thing.

However, if you’re looking for a park big on amenities, the Los Angeles / Pomona / Fairplex KOA in Pomona could also be a great choice. They have full hookups, a swimming pool and spa, a dump site, and even a Hollywood sightseeing tour that leaves from the park.

For a more rustic experience, check out Henninger Flats, a small campground nestled into the San Gabriel Mountains. If you prefer the sounds of birds chirping to cars honking, this might be the place to go when getting a camper rental in Sierra Madre. Sites are basic and have no hookups but there are toilets and drinking water spigots. There are also some great hikes that leave directly from the campground.

The nearest Walmart to Sierra Madre is a short drive away in Duarte. With manager permission, you might be able to camp here for a night or two, but you won’t have access to any amenities, so come prepared. When searching for fuel, stick to Sierra Madre Boulevard, as this is where most of the larger service stations will be found. If you’re in need of a truck stop with dump stations though, you’ll find them along Interstate 210, just a short drive away.

Exploring the Town of Sierra Madre

The Jet Propulsion Lab in nearby Pasadena is a must for anyone interested in science. It’s one of the primary research facilities for America’s space program and they offer tours where you can see some of NASA’s most fascinating spacecraft being assembled. If your visit to Sierra Madre includes New Years Day, don’t miss out on the Tournament of Roses Parade that’s also held in Pasadena. The rose-themed parade includes marching bands, decorated horses, and extremely creative floats. It’s also followed by the popular Rose Bowl college football game, one of the most watched games of the year.

The Los Angeles County Arboretum is also just a short drive away and is an amazing place to spend the afternoon, strolling the peaceful walkways and admiring the exotic plants being grown there. The Huntington Desert Garden also showcases some of the more interesting plant life native to Southern California and has one of the most impressive collections of cacti in the country.

For a cultural experience when you rent an RV in Sierra Madre, check out the Sierra Madre Playhouse. It’s a fairly small venue but they showcase some great local actors and actresses and tickets for a show are considerably more affordable than for those at Los Angeles theaters.
