One of the great perks of renting an RV is driving it, so why not jump behind the wheel and head for Jackson State Forest, just a short distance to the west? This park is one of the largest state-owned forests in California and has a significant percentage of second-growth redwood trees. These trees provide a magnificent vista for visitors as well as critical habitat for the wildlife species that depend on them. Bring your camera and binoculars, and keep your eyes peeled for the valley quail that reside here; pack a lunch, and you can picnic amongst the trees and next to the rivers that run through the park (picnic tables are available).Continue heading towards the coastline in your motorhome rental, and you will happen across Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, a clifftop garden with ocean views, trails for hiking, and spots where you can settle down for a relaxing picnic lunch. The mild climate makes this an ideal location for many plant species that can't survive the hotter and colder climates of other nearby areas; it also makes it more comfortable for hikers and those who want to explore the area and take in the wide variety of plant life on display.If mountain ranges and panoramic views are more your things, consider heading inland towards South Cow Mountain where you can enjoy hiking and mountain biking as well as picnics. Certain areas within the park are designated for off-highway vehicle use (such as dirt motorcycles) but are still open to hiking and biking. After you've finished for the day, head for nearby Clear Lake State Park for a refreshing swim.

Exploring The Area

Just shy of South Cow Mountain, Calpella is a moderately warm location with little humidity and a local vineyard that has an area for sampling their vintages, on-site wine sales, and the occasional social event. A second winery can be found just north of the city and, if you're hungry, a pub-style restaurant is on hand and open from late morning until late evening.Mendocino, located along the California coast, is a small town with great scenery and a thriving artist colony. Book an RV in Mendocino County, and you are a stone's throw away from this vibrant community with its quaint New England-style architecture, spring wildflowers, and secluded bluffs where the resident seals can be heard and seen splashing and playing. You will find this a great stop for both inexpensive and fine dining, whichever you choose.All of this can be yours, a vacation you will remember long after it has ended, and Willits KOA is where it will begin.
