Eldorado Canyon State Park is situated in northern Colorado and covers 885 acres. The state park is best known for being home to Eldorado Canyon, which is a sought-after spot for rock climbers. The land that the park now encompasses was once settled by Ute Indians, who lived in the surrounding canyons to protect themselves from harsh weather.

Eldorado Canyon State Park is a short drive away from Boulder and Denver. The climate in this part of Colorado can be very chilly, especially during the winter, although summer temperatures can be mild.

Getting Outdoors

You’ll find plenty of activities to do while at Eldorado Canyon State Park, like rock climbing. Thanks to its numerous geological formations, Eldorado Canyon State Park is a favorite destination for rock climbers of all skill levels. One of its most famous peaks is Eldorado Canyon, which features impressive sandstone walls and boulders.

Visitors can also go hiking. Eldorado Canyon State Park is packed with trails that range from easy hikes to challenging up-hill climbs. For those looking for something simple, the Streamside Trail might be ideal. This half-mile pathway is easy to trek down and will take you through the canyon and by a local creek. Another option is the Rattlesnake Gulch Trail, which runs about 1.4 miles and will take you to the ruins of Crags Hotel, an inn from the 1900s. Along the way, you might also come across some of the park’s wildlife, like toads, salamanders, mountain goats, skunks, and coyotes.

Another thing to do at Eldorado Canyon State Park is fishing. Fishers will find many different trout species swimming around in the park’s South Boulder Creek, like rainbow, brook, and cutthroat. Keep in mind that a Colorado fishing license is required to fish here.

Camping at Eldorado Canyon State Park

Exploring the Area

Should you’d like to take your camper on a few trips around the surrounding area, you’ll find some interesting options nearby. In Boulder, visitors can check out Flagstaff Mountain. Towering over the area at 6,983 feet, the mountain is covered in Douglas fir trees and offers a variety of hiking trails, many of which have panoramic views. While here, you might also come across many different types of birds and animals, like mountain lions and hawks.

Less than an hour away in Denver is the Denver Art Museum. This art museum holds over 70,000 works that range from classic to modern pieces. While here, visitors can also watch artists at work in their studios connected to the museum. Guided tours are provided, including a few that feature unique themes.

In Broomfield, there’s the Butterfly Pavilion. Believed to be one of the first insect zoos in the United States, the Butterfly Pavilion celebrates the life of this colorful insect. Visitors can step inside an enclosed greenhouse filled with plants and various types of butterflies. There are also a few interactive exhibits that tell more about the local geography and climate. In addition to this, visitors can meet some other bugs while here, like a tarantula that you can take pictures with.

Visitors could also drive over to Lakewood to explore the Colorado Railroad Museum. This museum is situated next to Clear Creek and tells more behind the history of the state’s railroad industry. Museum-goers will find numerous exhibits to view, including a rail yard and roundhouse. Train rides are available throughout the year on historic passenger cars. There are also tours, such as an audio tour, to help you learn even more intriguing information about its artifacts.

While in Lakewood, you could visit Dinosaur Ridge. This attraction is a small section in the Morrison Fossil Area National Natural Landmark and is one of the best places in the world for viewing dinosaur fossils. While here, visitors can hike down the Dinosaur Ridge Trail to view over 300 different dinosaur fossils and footprints. There is also a Discovery Center where visitors can check out various types of exhibits related to paleontology, including dinosaur skeletons.
