This town of fewer than 500 residents might seem like a strange place to rent an RV - that is until you realize that it’s near Red Rocks Amphitheater. The famed entertainment venue, 10 miles to the west of Denver, seats almost 10,000 and provides one of the most beautiful backdrops for musical performances with massive red sandstone slabs framing the stage. Notable concerts that have taken place there include The Beatles in 1964, Jimi Hendrix in 1968, U2 in 1983, and Neil Young in 2000.

While most visitors to Morrison are coming to attend a concert at Red Rocks, there’s actually quite a bit to do in the surrounding area and Denver is certainly close enough that day trips to the city could be part of your itinerary.

Unfortunately, despite the popularity of the amphitheater, there is no public transportation system linking Morrison to downtown Denver, though CID Colorado Shuttle to Red Rocks operates between the amphitheater and downtown Denver during performances.

RV Parks Near Morrison

When you book an RV in Morrison, there are a few options for where to stay. One of the closest is Indian Paintbrush Campground, just outside the city limits. The campground is inside Bear Creek Lake Park and has hot showers and electrical hookups at many of its sites. Be sure to reserve far in advance as it does fill up.

Another option for the Morrison RV rental is Dakota Ridge RV Park in Golden. It has a heated outdoor pool and hot tub in addition to sites with full hookups.

The nearest Walmart is five miles south of Morrison on Highway 270. It’s a great place to pick up cheap groceries or supplies for your concert experience (trash bags for ponchos, snacks, earplugs, etc.). If you need to fuel up your Morrison motorhome rental, the gas station on the edge of town is a good choice as it has quite a few pumps and won’t be too hard to maneuver around it. Truck stops will be farther away; one in Wheat Ridge is 13 minutes north of Morrison on I-70.

Be sure to plan your Morrison travel trailer rental camping options far in advance; popular concerts will invariably lead to all the nearby sites getting booked and staying far from the venue will make the experience much less enjoyable. Also note that traffic after concerts can be quite congested, so plan on taking some time getting back to your campsite after the show.

Exploring the City of Morrison

While concerts are the main attraction in Morrison, there’s no reason not to explore some of the other sights with your Morrison rental motorhome.

If the concert wasn’t enough of a musical experience, check out the Colorado Music Hall of Fame inside the Trading Post at Red Rocks. The museum opened in 2011 and features exhibits highlighting some of the best artists to come out of the state. Are you a fan of John Denver and his music? Pay tribute to the legend by visiting his statue just outside the Hall of Fame.

For something non-musical, take a trip to the Morrison Natural History Museum. It has several exhibits featuring fossil skeletons found in the region and kids can get some hands-on experience learning how to be a paleontologist.

If you like to see things go fast, be sure to check if there are any races happening at Bandimere Speedway. The track regularly plays host to NHRA drag races, just be sure to bring some earplugs - those cars are loud! Bringing the little ones along? Check out Tiny Town, a community of kid-sized houses and a miniature railway that can take you around to all of them. It’s great for an hour or two of family fun.

Getting Outside near Morrison

While booking an RV rental in Morrison is great for seeing a show at Red Rocks, it also gives you the freedom to travel and see some of the amazing sites nestled in this corner of the Rocky Mountains.

The Mount Falcon Castle Trail visits a stone lookout tower while providing excellent views of Denver and the Red Rocks area, and it’s actually within the Morrison city limits. The 2.3-mile hike is not very challenging and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Another good place to enjoy nature is in the adjacent town of Lakewood, where Bear Creek Lake Park is located. The park is popular with swimmers, anglers, and anyone just wanting to enjoy a nice day next to the water.

Rocky Mountain National Park and Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park are also both reasonably close by, at an hour and forty-five minutes and four and a half hours, respectively. Both are fantastic opportunities for hiking where you can see striking rock features and beautiful alpine forests. Rocky Mountain National Park is quite popular during the summer months, so if you don’t like the crowds, head to Black Canyon with the Morrison rental camper for a peaceful, low-traffic visit.
