This park used to be a phosphate mine back in the day. Once abandoned, nature took hold and reclaimed the area. Due to the mining practices, the park’s terrain is unlike any other. Alafia has steep cliffs, man-made lakes, and thick forested areas.

Getting Outdoors

This park is equipped for geocaching, which uses a virtual map connected to your GPS to show you hidden prizes that have been placed there by previous geo-seekers. This is a great way for Alafia River State Park campers to explore the wilderness and participate in an interactive game that gets you outdoors. RV campers in Alafia River State Park have over 20 miles of hiking trails to roam. Strap on your hiking boots and traverse these lands that were once an old phosphate mine that has been reclaimed by the earth since its abandonment. Because of the rugged, hilly terrain, these pathways are also great for mountain biking. Maintained by the Alafia Trail Crew, these trails are considered to be some of the best mountain biking in the state. All of the trails are also horse-friendly. There's a 12-horse barn available to Alafia River State Park campers at no charge, but is booked on a first-come-first-served basis.

If there's an angler among your group, this park has plenty of lakes and river access that's perfect for fishing. While catfish and bluegill are readily catchable, the park asks that anglers release all largemouth bass back into the water.

Camping at Alafia River State Park

This park has 30 campsites with water and electrical hookups offering the standard 20, 30, and 50-amp service. Some sites can handle campers up to 55 feet long, and a lot of sites are pull-through. Twelve of the sites have spots to tie up your horses as well. Each campsite comes equipped with a paved driveway, fire pit, and grill. There's a limited number of ADA compatible sites, so book in advance to secure your spot.

This park also comes with plenty of amenities to make sure that you have everything you need for the perfect RV camping experience. Dump stations, picnic tables, drinking water, flush toilets, and showers are just a few of the amenities available. Pets are welcome, but make sure they're on a leash and supervised at all times.

Exploring the Area

Is ground level getting a little boring for you? Feel the urge to plummet from an airplane at 120 mph and land safely on the ground with a trained professional? You’re in luck! A skydiving adventure company is located in Zephyrhills, less than hour from the park. This spot offers decent deals on one of the most exciting and safe extreme sports out there. Campers at Alafia State Park will get the chance to see a large diversity of animals in their natural habitat. If you want to see a more exotic variety, check out the famous ZooTampa at Lowry Park. This non-profit African-themed zoo was voted the number one family-friendly zoo in America in 2009. There's great food, tons of exhibits to explore, and foreign animals to discover.

Since you're in one of the most tropical wonderlands of the United States, it would be a shame not to visit one of the state’s best beaches. Clearwater Beach is just a short drive west, and once you get there, you’ll be happy you made the trip. Named after its crystal-clear water, this beach is a prime destination for any beach goer looking for a little luxury. Stretch out your towel on the white sandy shores or have a few cocktails and dinner at one of the many restaurants on the strip.

When it's time to get back on the road, fill your gas tank at any of the nearby gas stations. There aren’t any places to refill in the park, but you'll find plenty of small towns and bigger cities all within an hour’s drive of the park. And with Brandon and Tampa right down the road, the dining possibilities are endless. I-75 and US-301 are close by. Hop on to one of those major roads and they'll take you to wherever the rest of your vacation requires.
