About a 35 miles northeast of Jacksonville, the incredible Amelia Island holds one of Florida’s best-kept secrets: Fernandina Beach. This hidden gem lies on the border of Florida and Georgia and is known as the only municipality in the entire United States to have flown eight different flags; this is due mainly to the fact that this hotly contested territory has switched hands between several European countries in addition to becoming its own sovereign territory and being a part of both the United States and the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Fernandina Beach is a special place full of old architecture that reflects its turbulent past. Spanish missionaries, French colonists, and British soldiers all held Amelia Island at one point, so the buildings in the area are quite unique. In fact, several of Fernandina Beach’s buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. When you book an RV in Fernandina Beach, you’ll have a fantastic way to discover Florida’s stunning beaches while avoiding the more touristy places. Be sure to rent an RV during early May so you can attend the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, a celebration filled with fresh seafood, arts, antiques, fireworks, and parades!

The Great Outdoors

Fernandina Beach is perfectly situated on the idyllic coastlines of northern Florida, making it quite an ideal place to rent an RV for your next vacation. The Sunshine State has over 1,350 miles of coastline making it a beach lover’s paradise, and there are exciting wetlands at every turn. Before you even leave town in your Fernandina Beach camper rental, go see the splendid beaches around town. Main Beach Park, in the heart of town, has a lovely wooden boardwalk and a bevy of volleyball and basketball courts for you to enjoy. Eat lunch in one of the many picnic pavilions or take a dip in the Atlantic Ocean.

North Beach Park and Seaside Park are other fantastic beaches located in Fernandina Beach, with boardwalks, outdoor showers, restroom facilities, and charming sand dunes full of different local wildlife species.

Fort Clinch State Park lies on the northern reaches of Amelia Island and is named for the historic 18th-century fort that was built as a military base to protect from hostile outsiders. The surrounding preserve contains tidal marsh, sand dunes, forests, and grassy plains, all great for recreation. You can go fishing, swimming, surfing, kayaking, or just read a good book on the white sand beaches, when you bring your Fernandina Beach RV rental to this amazing state park.

At the southernmost point of Amelia Island, you can also bring your Fernandina rental RV to Amelia Island State Park, which is popular for horseback riding and surf cast fishing off the shore. Big Talbot State Park and Little Talbot Island State Park are just over the bridge from Amelia Island State Park, located on the mainland. Paved biking paths, picnic pavilions on the bluffs, and guided kayak tours are all great reasons to visit these coastal treasures.

Ocala National Forest, down between Orlando and Daytona Beach, provides a fantastic place to relax and enjoy the tranquil forests and desert land located in Florida’s black bear corridor. This sprawling recreation and wilderness area takes up over 600 square miles of central Florida, and is the oldest forest east of the Mississippi River, making it an exceptional vacation destination when you book a motorhome rental in Fernandina Beach.

Exploring the City

Don’t miss out on a visit to the small city of Fernandina Beach itself when you head there to rent an RV. While the nearby beaches and conservation areas might captivate you, the charming downtown area is full of life and excitement that will have you contemplating a permanent move there. The natural starting point is the Amelia Island Historic District, rife with beautiful architecture restored and preserved to showcase the unique style the island possesses. You can eat to your stomach’s content at one of many local eateries or stroll down the pedestrian-friendly roads. Each Saturday there is a local farmers market that has arts, crafts, and amazing culinary treats.

The Amelia Island Museum of History is another spot worthy of a visit. This wonderful educational institute comes to life with lots of different exhibits. Here you can learn about the Spanish missionaries, or the Timuacan natives that lived on the island long before the Europeans arrived. For a change of pace, the Fernandina Pinball Museum or the Maritime Museum of Amelia Island are both fun places to spend a few hours. Historic Fort Clinch, located within the aforementioned park, has lots of tours and reenactments of Civil War battles making for both an educational and fun way to enjoy the area.
