Holden Pond is a 51-acre lake situated in northern Florida. The pond connects to the nearby Little Orange Lake with a canal and is surrounded by numerous parks. Holden Pond features a beautiful landscape and is bordered by thick forests and marshes.

Holden Pond is located near many major cities, including Gainesville and Jacksonville. While the climate is a little humid during the spring and summer, temperatures significantly cool down during the winter.

Getting Outdoors

You’ll discover many outdoor activities to do while visiting Holden Pond. One activity to do is fishing. Holden Pond contains many different species, such as bass, shell crackers, and bluegill. The lake is also known for its abundance of bowfin. Boat rentals are available, and there are a few boat ramps located around the edge of the lake. However, it’s important to check the Florida Fish Advisory to ensure the water quality is good before heading out to fish.

Holden Pond is also near many parks that are filled with trails making it a good spot for hiking. Holden Pond Park is located on the western edge of the lake and features a few trails winding through the surrounding forest. There’s also the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway, which is one of the largest greenways in the United States. It has over 300 miles of trails as well as a land bridge that crosses over the nearby interstate.

Wildlife photography is yet another thing to do while at Holden Pond. The surrounding area is a favorite habitat for numerous types of animals, such as manatees, panthers, alligators, and bears. Birds also enjoy flying over the area, and you might catch a glimpse of spoonbills or egrets hunting in the lake.

Exploring the Area

You’ll find many interesting places to visit with your RV in the surrounding area. A short drive away in Gainesville is the Butterfly Rainforest. Located inside the Florida Museum of Natural History, the rainforest is packed with thousands of colorful butterflies that happily float through native plants and waterfalls. In addition to butterflies, birds, fish, and turtles also live in this humid room. Guests can walk through the rainforest to catch a glimpse of these insects and animals or attend a hands-on talk with a scientist who will discuss more behind the life of these insects.

In Jacksonville, there’s Amelia Island. The island is part of the Sea Islands chain and has a unique history that mixes Spanish, British, and French culture. Visitors to Amelia Island can stop by Main Beach Park, which features a long boardwalk surrounded by sand dunes. Beachcombers can keep an eye out for shark teeth, which tend to wash up to shore often. Amelia Island also has many quaint restaurants that serve dishes that feature locally caught seafood.

Less than two hours away in St. Augustine is the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum. The lighthouse was built in the late 1870s and overlooks a shipwreck site. The museum is attached to the lighthouse has many exhibits that showcase more behind the history of the structure. Museum-goers will be able to view old oil lamps, sailing ropes, and other nautical items. Visitors can also buy tickets to climb up to the tower of the lighthouse to get stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area.

In Daytona Beach, visitors can check out the Angell & Phelps Chocolate Factory. While here, you’ll be able to munch on handmade chocolate creations and buy unique chocolate boxes. You could also try some of the factory’s specialty items, which include chocolate bark, peanut butter cups, and buckeyes. Tours are available of the facility, which will take you into the kitchen, allowing you to see how their chocolate is made. The tours are 20 minutes long and take place Monday to Saturday at various times throughout the day. They are free and offer small chocolate samples at the end.
