Camp in an RV near Lady Lake and head east to the Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area, which is a renowned birdwatching area on the eastern side of Lake Griffin. This 7,000-acre reserve is one of the many sites along the Great Florida Birding Trail and has been designated as a National Natural Landmark. Follow the scenic wildlife drive to explore the marsh where Florida mottled ducks, green-winged teal, and white pelicans can be seen, together with large numbers of eastern greater sandhill cranes during the winter migration. The wetlands of the Emeralda Marsh and its surrounding water bodies also support one of the highest concentrations of alligators in Central Florida. A short drive north of the Recreation Plantation RV Resort sprawls the Ocala National Forest, which encompasses large areas of sand pine scrub forest. It’s dotted with picturesque lakes and ponds where you can cool off during the hot summer months, as well natural springs such as the Juniper Springs and Alexander Springs. Hike part of the long-distance Florida National Scenic Trail that winds through the forest or kayak along the 4.5-mile Salt Springs Run, with the challenging Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail awaiting those who want to explore on two wheels. Camping at Recreation Plantation RV Resort is also a good base for visiting the Seminole State Forest, which sprawls across more than 25,000 acres near Eustis. It encompasses almost all of the native vegetative communities that are found in Central Florida, as well as providing important habitat for numerous rare and threatened species. Keep your eyes peeled for Florida black bear and scrub jay as you explore the hiking and horseback riding trails, as well as hooded pitcher plants and eastern indigo snakes. Also within the bounds of the Seminole State Forest is the Wekiva Wild and Scenic River System, which is best explored by canoe.

Lady Lake campers can pick up grocery supplies at one of the supermarkets at La Plaza Grande West, with plenty of gas stations in the immediate surrounds if you need to fill up your RV rental. While you’re in Lady Lake, don’t miss a visit to the Lady Lake Historical Society and Museum, which details the people and events that have shaped the region. See vintage artifacts from the early citrus industry and period furnishings, then watch the trains coming and going along the miniature HO gauge railroad. An hour’s drive southeast of Recreational Plantation RV Resort will see you in the heart of Orlando, which is home to excellent museums and cultural attractions. Stroll along the scenic trails of the Harry P Leu Gardens or discover the local gastronomy at the artisan food booths of the East End Market.
