In central Florida, to the northwest of Orlando, lies the peaceful community of Tavares. Tavares is sandwiched between several local lakes and was founded in 1880 by Alexander St. Clair-Abrams and named for a Portuguese ancestor. Despite not being formally incorporated until 1919, the town’s founder worked tirelessly to build Tavares up by building a post office, a schoolhouse, residential homes, and even persuading the railways to connect with his community. At one point, Alexander St. Clair-Abrams even sought to make Tavares the state capital of Florida, a plan that never quite came to fruition.

Tavares is proud to be “America’s Seaplane City” due to the Tavares Seaplane Base being located on Lake Dora adjacent to town. This town-owned base is a unique feature not found in too many other places, which contributes to the local culture and pride. Lovely nature conservation areas and forests can be found in nearly any direction you choose and the Atlantic Ocean can be found by driving your Tavares camper rental east. When you book an RV in Tavares, not only is Orlando close by, but also Tampa and Daytona Beach. Florida is your oyster and Tavares is the pearl, located smack dab in the middle.

The Great Outdoors

Florida might be known for its iconic white sand beaches, but the inland part of Florida might be just as beautiful. Water is abundant in central Florida, with too many lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, and swamps to possibly count. Wekiwa Springs State Park is quite close to town and thus easy to find when you rent an RV in Tavares. This park is home to several important waterways like the Wekiva River which prove to be great spots for fishing. The springs are known to churn over 40 million gallons of fresh water into the Wekiva River each day and are popular places to swim when the sun is out. When you bring your Tavares camper rental to Wekiwa Springs, you can also go cycling, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, camping, or even snorkeling near the underwater caves connected to the spring. The park is connected to Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park and Seminole State Forest too. Seminole State Forest has lots of hiking loops, canoeing areas, shooting ranges, horseback riding, and camping for you and your Tavares camper rental too.

If you are aching for some waves and sunshine, Canaveral National Seashore is a fantastic place to post up in your Tavares motorhome rental. This spectacular barrier island is full of pristine beaches with minimal human influence and a bevy of wild animals like migratory birds and mother turtles laying eggs. Hiking by the sea is an excellent way to unwind and the park even has some great views of the Cape Canaveral NASA Launching Facility, where rockets and shuttles to space are launched.

Ocala National Forest is several miles north of Tavares, and quite an exciting place to spend part of your Tavares RV rental vacation in pursuit of solitude, picturesque scenery, and amazing hiking. The forest is one of the oldest in the country and contains over 400,000 acres of low-lying wetlands, pine forest, small desert microclimates, and oak savannah land. There are several campgrounds to utilize when you rent an RV and head to the beloved national forest north of town but be wary of mischievous black bears looking for food in Florida’s infamous black bear corridor. There are many other lakes and parks nearby to explore depending on what you hope to do outdoors, as well as thousands of beaches along the coast to visit.

RV Parks

Florida is practically known for its many RV parks and campgrounds due to its amazing weather year-round, so when you rent an RV in Tavares, finding a place to stay overnight should be a breeze. Lake Saunders RV Resort has a strict 55+ age limit. The park is minutes from historic Mount Dora and has all of the fishing, boating, and swimming you could possibly need. Holiday RV Village also caters to people over the age of 55 and has a large pool and many resort-like amenities.

Southern Palms RV Resort on Lake Eustis has a bevy of amenities, like a fitness center, a clubhouse, a pool complete with a hot tub and sauna, shuffleboard, and much more. Fisherman's Cove is a haven for fishing enthusiasts to gear up and hit the water. The Fisherman’s Cove has ample space to fish and its very own marina for guests to dock their boats.

Exploring the City

Tavares is a quaint little town characterized by its charm and gorgeous lakefront on Lake Dora, Lake Eustis, and Lake Harris. Although the town has its eateries and farmers markets, many of the area’s attractions are found in neighboring towns like Mount Dora and Eustis.

Lake Eustis Museum of Art houses a fabulous collection of art on display for the viewing public in the hopes that it may enrich local culture and foster a love of the arts for generations to come. It is not often that such a small town has a museum of this caliber. Mount Dora Historical Society Museum is the area’s preeminent resource on the local history of Mount Dora, Eustis, and Tavares. The museum is small and quick to get through but a memorable experience nonetheless.

The Howey Mansion is a gem of an old house that is one of many architectural masterpieces in the area. The house was built in the 1920s and restored by two locals who now open it for tours, weddings, and other events. The Mount Dora Museum of Speed is probably the most thrilling attraction nearby, with a focus on all things fast. There is more to this museum than just hot rods and muscle cars from decades ago; autographed music instruments, old neon signs, black and white original TVs, and many more old objects from America’s past.
