Venus is a small unincorporated community in southern Florida. There’s really not much to do in this small town besides hunting and fishing. However, the community’s proximity to larger Florida cities makes it a definite point of interest. Minutes from Lake Placid and within driving distance of Miami, Orlando, and West Palm Beach, Venus is a great place to rent an RV and set out in any direction to explore all that Florida has to offer.

Discover Venus

The Great Outdoors

About half an hour's drive outside of Venus is Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring, Florida. Experience one of Florida’s most unique and diverse collections of plant and animal life. Black bears, Florida panthers, deer, alligators, and a variety of birds make their home among the park’s ferns and massive oak trees. Visitors to the park can hike, horseback ride, picnic, or just enjoy the scenery. If you rent a motorhome in Venus, you can enjoy the park at night, too, by reserving a spot at Highland Hammond’s campground. The campground can accommodate RVs up to 50 feet in length and includes full hookups, shower facilities, laundry, and dishwashing areas.

Another lesser-known area to experience the Florida outdoors is Platt Branch Wildlife and Environmental Area. The area encompasses 1,972 acres and offers opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife viewing. Visitors can also stroll along the 4.7-mile loop trail which passes through oak scrub, pine flatwoods, and seasonal wetlands.

Once you’ve checked out the outdoors around the area, hitch up your RV trailer rental from Venus and head toward the coast for Fort Myers. The Manatee Park near Fort Myers is a waterfront park with paved walking trails, kayak rentals, an amphitheater, and up-close encounters with Florida’s beloved manatees. There is also a playground for young children, a butterfly garden, and a picnic area.

RV Parks

Book a motorhome rental in Venus and post up at one of the city’s many RV parks. An option in nearby Lake Placid is Camp Florida Resort. Dozens of spots with full hookups are available. Pets are welcome, but campers with pets are restricted to only certain areas of the campground. Camp Florida Resort has many amenities including a clubhouse, pool and pool house, fishing pier and boat slips, a bathhouse, laundry machines, and outdoor spaces for shuffleboard, bocce ball, and horseshoes.

Another place to park your RV rental near Venus is at Lake Josephine RV Resort. Located about a 30-minute drive outside of Venus in Sebring, the resort has over 175 shaded full hook-up RV sites. Pull-through and back-in sites are available. The campground is pet-friendly, offers Wi-Fi, and is cable-ready. Restroom and laundry facilities are available for your comfort and convenience. Guests also have direct access to Lake Josephine for boating, fishing, and kayaking.

Exploring the City

Just beyond the town of Venus, visitors can visit the ghost town of what is now called Old Venus. Once a town of agriculture workers, cattlemen, and a booming turpentine industry, visitors can drive past the eerie remains of the Venus Baptist Church, a general store, and some old, long abandoned homes built almost half a century ago.

Just a few miles outside of Venus in Palmdale is Gatorama. The park has been around since 1957 and is home to hundreds of Florida gators. Here, visitors can encounter these majestic reptiles up close and personal — but not too close and personal. You can even hold baby alligators if you wish. Besides alligators, there are several other types of animals at Gatorama, including the highly endangered Florida panther. There is also a petting zoo, a food truck on site, and a gift shop selling everything from salt scrubs to gator meat.

Another cool thing to check out when you book an RV in Highlands County are the Lake Placid murals. There are over 50 murals painted throughout the downtown area of Lake Placid. Each mural is related to the city and tells of its culture or about some of Lake Placid’s most prominent citizens.

And you can’t visit Venus, Florida without checking out The Venus Project headquarters. With modern and dynamic ideas, Jacque Fresco, the founder of The Venus Project seeks to create a city with reduced crime, poverty, hunger, homelessness, and many other problems pressing the world today. His experimental and futuristic research center is located just a few miles west of the city, and seminars and tours are available to the public on certain days.
