After the American Revolution ended, the fledgling nation gave away land in Georgia to veterans of the war. Thirty-four families established farms and mills in the area that eventually become Auburn, GA. The small farming community slowly grew over the subsequent decades until Civil War reared its ugly head. Both sides raided the farms multiple times in an attempt to replenish their dwindling supplies. A now-defunct railroad company laid down tracks and built a depot in the early 1890s, bringing in a fresh influx of settlers. At this time, it became necessary to establish a postal office and officially found the town. The name, Auburn, was inspired by the rich, red clay soil.

Roughly at the halfway point between Atlanta and Athens. Auburn also is close to several wilderness parks. The convenient location makes Auburn the perfect place to rent an RV. The closest large town is Lawrenceville.

Discover Auburn

The Great Outdoors

Common reasons to book an RV in Auburn, are to skip the hotels and get closer to nature. There’s nothing like waking up to birdsong or listening to wolves howl at nighttime. There are many pockets of wilderness in this part of Georgia, and exploring them all in an Auburn camper rental is smart. Lake Lanier, in spite of its reputation for being haunted, is a popular fishing and boating destination. Fish, water-ski, sail, and swim. This lake is rife with striped bass, walleye, largemouth bass, bluegill, and several other species. The water park on the islands also provides a different source of fun: turbo slides, wave pools, whitewater rafting, and zip lines that passes over the lake itself. Bring your Auburn travel trailer rental, because several campgrounds line the banks of the lake.

Does pure wilderness untouched by mankind still exist in Georgia? Find out at the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests, which is one of the largest wilderness parks on the east coast. Encompassing almost 400,000 acres (and significantly more when combined with the adjacent park in North Carolina), adventurers on the less-trafficked trails often encounter true solitude, never seeing another soul on their trek. Hundreds of miles of multi-use trails wind through a variety of terrain. Mature, old-growth woods. Open meadows. Wetlands. And streams and lakes in which trout and bass all but jump into boats. Several waterfalls are scattered throughout the park, though many only appear after heavy rainfall. The best-known one is found in Anna Ruby Falls Recreation Area, which has two separate waterfalls that merge at a halfway point to form one larger fall. Camping, surprising no one, is also a popular recreational activity at this park, and several campgrounds have hookups for RVs. If you prefer to rough it in an RV rental, there are other more-barebone campgrounds, too.

RV Parks

When planning your visit to Auburn, be sure to consider where you’ll park overnight in your Auburn rental RV. The narrow country roads and town regulations mean it’s difficult to find overnight parking. There are dozens of campgrounds in the area, though.

On the banks of Lake Lanier, Van Pugh South Campground is a state-run facility open only April till September. The small facility does provide restrooms, electric and water hookups, and showers. A boat ramp is a nice perk, too.

The Georgia RV Park in Commerce may be a good option. Farther away from the lake, the mosquitoes are not as prevalent. The campground boasts a number of unique features like a saltwater pool and WiFi throughout the heavily wooded property.

Exploring the City

Though Auburn is somewhat isolated, the neighboring towns as well as the close proximity to Athens and Atlanta, make it a terrific place to use as a temporary home base. An Auburn motorhome rental makes it easy to explore all the local towns and search for little out-of-way shops and other attractions. Treetop Quest in Buford, GA, is a fun-filled aerial park for adventurers. Climb, soar, and zip from tree to tree. For the bold, a portion of the course is done entirely without a harness or safety line. There is, of course, a giant net below the obstacles. Just in case.

If there is one thing Atlanta is known for, it’s Coca-Cola. The World of Coca-Cola in the heart of the Atlanta downtown area is an interactive museum for people of all ages. Explore the vault that has held corporate secrets for the past 100 years, browse the pop-art gallery and other historical artifacts, and check out the 4D theater. Visitors can also opt for a behind-the-scenes tour of the factory, getting a look at the bottling process or meet Coca-Cola Polar Bear for a photo-op. Wrap up the visit by sampling 100 different drinks sold by Coca-Cola around the world.

Grapevines flourish in Georgia’s humid summers and mild winters and rich soil. Dozens of wineries surround the area. Chateau Elan Winery in Braselton is perhaps one of the most successful ones in the area. In addition to producing award-winning wines, it’s also a premier castle-like resort. Walk-in visitors are very welcome, though. The tasting room includes a behind-the-scenes tour of the vat and production rooms, and the wine stewards walk visitors through the process of wine production. The tasting room looks out on a majestic view of rolling hills blanketed by tidy rows of grapevines. Sample the award-winning wines. Chateau Elan specializes in white wine blends, though they do have reds, too.

Hop into an Auburn camper rental and go explore the warm, friendly state. Make new memories to last a lifetime.
